How to Look After Patio Furniture

Brand new patio furniture is an asset to any home and looks gorgeous sitting on your patio. Very quickly however it will start to look dirty and the worse for wear if you don't look after it. The problem is that patio furniture is constantly exposed to both weather and pollution. If you look after it however, your furniture will last for years. Here's how to keep it looking good.

1. Regular Cleaning

If you brush any dirt off your furniture and give it a weekly wipe with a damp cloth it will go a long way towards keeping your furniture in good condition.

2. Extra Cleaning

If your furniture has become extra dirty or you haven't been giving it a weekly wipe, wash your furniture down using  a sponge and soapy water and then rinse and allow it to dry. White plastic furniture may need a mild bleaching agent in the water but other than that no harsh chemicals should be needed - just good old fashioned elbow grease.

3. Oil wooden Furniture

If you have bare natural hardwood furniture such as teak treat it with oil regularly following manufacturer's instructions to keep the wood in good condition.

4. Shine Metal Furniture

Use car polish or wax to give a sheen to tough aluminum furniture

5. Re-apply paint or lacquer

Where wooden or wrought iron furniture has a lacquered or painted surface reapply as soon as the lacquer or paint starts to show signs of wear.

6. Bring cushions Indoors

Bring cushions indoors when not in use as they can easily become mildewed if left out in the rain. Wash or surface sponge regularly following the care label on the cushions to keep them in good order.

7. Store Your Furniture in Winter

Protect all garden furniture from the harsh elements of winter by storing in a basement, garage or outbuilding. If you don't have space cover your furniture with a waterproof cover and find a sheltered spot in the garden to store it. In any case always bring your cushions and garden umbrella indoors for the winter.
