A Bath Vanity - An Essential Piece of Bathroom Furniture

Every bathroom needs a bath vanity. Along with the toilet and bathtub, this is a visible piece of furniture that houses the wash basin and provides a space where you can keep your toiletries. There are many models to choose from such as a traditional model with a countertop housing the sink and the plumbing. You may have an antique piece of furniture that can be remodeled to serve as a vanity in the bathroom or you may like the vessel sick stands that have become popular in recent years.

Some factors that you should take into consideration when choosing the bath vanity include:

your preference in style for the bathroom
the size of the bathroom, which in turn translates into the size of vanity it will accommodate
how much storage you need to have
whether or not this will be the main area you use for grooming on a daily basis
whether or not this is the main bathroom of the home
whether you want to have a single or double glass sink in the vanity

Basically when you remodel a bathroom or are starting from scratch, you have many choices depending on the decor of the bathroom itself. You may have to do some online browsing to see the many styles available. You can decorate your bathroom just as lavishly as the rest of the rooms in your home.

There are decorative vanities that are hand painted and stand out as a work of art. Some vanities come as a complete kit with the countertop and mirror included, but in most cases, you have to purchase these accessories separately.

Before you start shopping for a bath vanity, measure the space you have available for this piece of furniture. Most commercially produced vanities measure between 18 inches and 50 inches wide, enabling you to easily find one that will fit in a small or large space. The height of the vanity is often a factor that many homeowners forget about until they find that the vanity is too low or too high for them to use comfortably.

You can also choose a custom made vanity built right in the bathroom or one that you have built for you and installed when it is finished. There are also many choices available in the material for the bath vanity - stone, wood, MDF, and more.

The material of the vanity will affect the price, which is why there is such a wide range in the costs of such furniture. You also have to consider the color and design as well as the durability of the material. How hard it will be to keep clean is often a concern of families with small children. Materials that can withstand water are important to avoid having unsightly stains develop.

You don't need to have the same size bath vanity in a guest bedroom as you do in the main bathroom of the home. In a family bathroom, the vanity needs to have many drawers and cupboards for storage. You also want to consider the lighting in the bathroom and the type of fixtures you want to use. In choosing the type of doors, there are two options - framed and frameless. In frameless doors, the hardware is hidden and is not visible on the outside.

Causes of Septic Tank Odor In The Home

If you live in a rural area, there's a good chance your house is equipped with a septic tank. The septic tank will normally go unnoticed during day-to-day living, but it sometimes makes it odorous presence well known.

If you are experiencing an odor from your septic tank, it is usually caused by one of three things.

1. Dry Drains

A dry drain is probably the most common cause of septic tank odor in the home.

Nearly all drains include what is called a "trap" somewhere along the pipe. This is a U-shaped segment of pipe filled with water which prevents gases from traveling through.

If the water should dry up, however, the gases are able to leak into your house. This most often occurs in places such as guest bathrooms or other places where the drain is used infrequently.

The solution to this common problem is to simply run water through the drain. This will refill the trap and stop the gases from reaching your house.

To avoid future dry drains, you should use them periodically to prevent them from drying up.

2. Problems With The Vent Stack

Septic tank odors can also be allowed to enter your house because of a problem with what is known as the vent stack.

The gases produced by the tank are released via a pipe that extends through your roof. This is the vent stack.

If this pipe should become clogged with leaves or other debris, the gases will not be able to travel through and will be forced back down into your house.

Leaves covering the opening of the vent stack may need to be manually removed.

Even if the gases are allowed to pass through the vent stack, a strong wind with some down force may blow the gases back down to your house again. This is normally fixed by raising the height of the stack.

3. Faulty Seals/Gaskets

Yet another possible cause of septic tank odors within the home is a broken seal or gasket along one of the pipes.

This commonly occurs near the base of the toilet, and you should be able to detect it by smelling around the area.

Unless you are a handyman, it is probably best to call a plumber or other professional to repair the seal. It should be a relatively simple job, and not too expensive.

If you would like to learn more about septic tank odors in the house, please visit our septic tank website for more information

Decorate on a Budget With Discount Bathroom Vanities

When it comes time to redecorate you will want to set your budget and stick to it. There are many places you can cut costs, and one is with discount bathroom vanities. Purchasing a discount bathroom vanity can help you to stretch your budget, possibly even enough to allow you start on another room when you are done redecorating the bathroom.

Often discount vanities have a small flaw, usually because they are floor models. These are cosmetic and do not take away from the basic function of the vanity in any way. Many times you can use a little paint or take time to sand a small scratch and you end up with a nice, expensive looking, good quality piece for a very affordable price. Here are some tips to help you find a discount vanity as well as other discount pieces:

1) Buy from a private party-- Often when friends and family remodel they change everything, including the vanity. If you know someone who is getting a new vanity they may be willing to let their old one go for a discount price (some may even give them to you if you are close enough). There are many people who purchase a home and remodel and then sell their vanity at a garage sale or flea market. Look for these sales in local newspapers.

2) Clearance sales at Home Improvement Stores-- As stores rotate their stock you will often be able to pick up excellent bargains. It is not unusual to find items marked as much as 75% off (or more) when new stock is on its way in. These items are occasionally scratched, but more often than not there is nothing wrong with them besides the fact they are last season's model. By purchasing your vanity during the non-peak seasons and during times the stores are rotating their stock you can end up saving a bundle.

3) Discount Warehouses-- These stores are specifically designated stores for out of date/off season stock as well as slightly damaged freight. You can often find bargain prices that result in you getting what you wanted at less than half of what you would have paid retail. You will want to check over each item before you purchase it to make sure it isn't damaged badly enough to render it useless. For the most part, these warehouses sell sound merchandise at a fraction of the cost.

4) The internet-- One of the most convenient places to shop is online. There are many stores and auctions available if you take the time to surf for the best price, and you can easily save yourself enough to be able to redecorate your bathroom as well as another room in your home with what it would have normally cost. Bathroom vanities are available in thousands of stores online. You need to remember when you are thinking about making a purchase that you want a reputable seller. You probably don't want to spend a large amount of money if the deal sounds too good to be true or if the person is evasive when you ask questions. Keep shipping charges in mind too, they will increase your out of pocket costs. Some places offer free shipping.

Keep in mind a bargain is only a bargain if it truly saves you money and is usable. If you save hundreds of dollars by spending hundreds of dollars on trash you won't be happy. Making sure all of the measurements have been taken and checked is also important. Making a purchase only to find out the vanity won't fit is no fun either.

High Tech Solution to Calculate Construction Costs

If you are planning to build a house, then the first thing you have to do is to calculate construction costs. Although you can easily ask for estimates from builders and contractors, it is still best if you can determine the actual expenses of materials you will use for the project.

Here is a high tech solution to accurately estimate the construction costs for any house building project.

Using Architectural Design Software

In the past, estimating construction costs was very expensive. First, you need to hire a licensed architect to design the house structure. Professional fees of architects are costly and this could take away significant portion of your budget for the project.

After getting the final blue print of the house design, then you have to ask several contractors to give you an estimate for the construction costs. However, most estimates will exceed your budget which could dent your finances.

By using architectural design software, you eliminate the need to hire an architect and you can easily determine the actual cost of materials for the project. There are lots of user-friendly design applications you can use and some of them you can download for free.

The Process of Computer-Aided House Design

The first thing you have to do is to select a house building and design application that would be easy to use. This way, you will not spend much time learning to use the software.

You have to find a construction design application that has a drag and drop utility. This will allow you to simply point and select the types of building materials you will use and drag-and-drop these to create a house structure.

All the elements of house building will be included in such applications. You can start by creating the structure of the house. Then you have to build walls, floors, windows, and roofing.

Once you created the basic house design, you can now switch to interior design mode. You will be able to select floor tiling, kitchen construction, plumbing, electrical wiring, and other aspects of house building.

If you can master the software, you will be able to create a complete house design with accurate measurements of dimensions in less than a week.

Automating Construction Costs

Now that you have a complete house design, the next step is to estimate the costs of materials you used on your design. You can run a complete inventory check from the software.

The design application will generate an accurate count of materials used for the design. You will get a complete accounting of materials that will be used for the house down to the smallest kitchen tiles.

Once you have the data, simply print out the list and start calling several construction material stores. You can also use to Internet to get different pricelists of house building materials. Base on the prices you gathered, you can now calculate the actual cost of your project.

Estimating construction costs nowadays is easier and faster if you utilize computer aided design software. All you have to do is to add the labor cost and other contingency expenses and you will be able to get an accurate estimation of the entire construction costs.

George Edmondson is an accomplished writer on construction costs estimation. There are numerous articles and resources about construction costs that you can find. Simply visit http://www.aboutconstructioncosts.com and learn how to accurately estimate construction costs.

Taking Advantage of the Extra Space in Your Home - Home Tips

If you intend to remodel your home, instead of just improving the decor and fixtures of your home, you could consider taking advantage of any extra space you have in your home.

This means that if you need an extra room, you could convert your basement and attic into additional rooms or game rooms that your family will really like and enjoy spending time in. many a times, this is a much better alternative than keeping these areas as dark and gloomy storage areas.

If you intend to remodel your basement, you have to first repair any water problems you have. This may take some time to get into operation; this is why it is better to get the help of a home inspector in solving water proofing problems. This way, you are sure that your new room will not have any water problems on completion.

Use the help of a professional designer

You have to decide what you intend to use your basement for depending on the conditions of the basement. Poor lighting suggests a dark room or home theater and an isolated atmosphere suggests a cushion for noisy stuff like a game room or hangout.

It is up to you to decide and make the right choice with the help of a professional designer. This way you will be able to make maximum use of the basements natural light with perhaps using large windows and glass bricks for added safety from thieves.

Remember that the basement may have few vents in it; so when remodeling, remember the need of good air circulation and place openings where needed. You could also install a carbon monoxide detector for safety reasons in picking up warnings of problems with venting.

Decide what you want to use your attic for

Besides remodeling the basement, you can remodel the attic for extra space. In doing so, once again, you have to consider what you intend to remodel the attic into. You can get ideas for this by thinking what you are in deficit of in the house; perhaps a bedroom, study room or a bathroom.

You can then get the help of a designer to design the place, and to give an estimate of remodeling costs; this way you will be able to decide if it is worth remodeling or not. Like if you intend to make a bathroom, consider if the costs incurred in building it like reinforcement in walls is worth the remodeling.

Also find out if local building codes and zoning laws permit an addition, your type of addition, the materials you intend to use, how you intend to provide access to the new structure and if reinforcement of walls and floor is required to hold any heavy equipment you intend to place in the additional space.

With all this covered, you should have no problems in remodeling your home, to use that extra spots in your home wisely.

Bathroom Wall Clock Considerations

You may not realize it, but the clock you choose for your bathroom is actually going to influence your life in a variety of ways. You see the bathroom is all about time. In the morning it is about accomplishing goals, cleansing, primping and preening yourself, all within the time limit set by your days goals, whether it be a job, or errands that have to be run.

Later on, when you have some time to relax, time becomes more like an old companion. As the clock ticks, its steady beat, you can almost feel the languid march of time, as you sink into luxurious relaxation.

However, the clock you choose will influence this experience in a profound way. How this influence affects you, will be determined based on both appearance, and function.

As far as function, you need a clock that accurate. It is better to have no clock at all than to have one which tells time irregularly.

You also have to decide whether it is worth taking the extra care to get a clock that is truly silent. Most inexpensive commercial clocks tend to have a faint tick, tick, tick sound when they are running. This is generally inaudible, but when relaxing in a warm bath, the slight sound can be infuriating to some. Luckily, there are many clocks on the market which are specifically designed to run silent.

In terms of options, the appearance of the clock will have a much greater impact on your bathroom than its function will. Here you have the choice of either choosing something which will blend innocuously into the room, or a piece which will stand out as a focal point to the space.

Whatever clock you choose, you should be certain that it reflects your personality, and has a calm, soothing, and even inspiring effect on you.

Bathroom Tile Tips For Your Renovation

The bathroom is characteristically something that is worked on foremost or is the first project on a person's renovation of their new home. This happens for a very good reason. It is the one room that is used by visitors and occupants alike regularly and is the place a person cleanses themselves. Homeowners pick good bathroom floor and wall tiles for their renovations for a very good reason.

To wow your guests as they briefly use the toilet in your property unique tiles for bathroom walls and the floor is the key. The cheaper option is the painted ceramic tile which can be used both as a floor tile or wall tile. However it is widely acclaimed that the contemporary and most popular choices for bathroom floor and wall tiles is the ceramic tile. Often to create a general feel of a wet room the floor tiles will be the same colour as that of the wall but slightly darker as the lighting will highlight the floor. The key benefit of using quality and modern floor and wall tiles is because it's one of the best options to increase the value of your property and make your bathroom the centre piece of the home.

Creating something different or surprising in your bathroom can be achieved by aiming to be creative with the ceramic tile you wish to install and come up with a unique look by thinking up a pattern or custom colour. In Italy consumers use originality on their bathroom tile to create unique designs which fit the mood of the particular property owners. In stark contrast to the Middle East, where what is unique about the bathroom tiles there is that the fixtures and fittings are the source of innovation, which is somewhat surprising, but they concentrate heavily on storage and positioning instead of look and feel.

Builders and property owners who are keeping their eyes open for cost effective and innovative bathroom tiles which are totally unique pieces of art will be satisfied with the creative wows that should not be missed from the Philippines. Labour is cheap and unique design ideas are rich. Though standardized in composition, each tile is distinctive having no patterns that are the same. Every tile undergoes a process of design, analysis for its uniqueness and then construction, which is not seen in Western Europe.

Concrete Methods - Adding Reinforcement

One of the most important factors to consider when pouring, forming and placing concrete is what kind reinforcement is needed, if any is needed at all. Recent technologies in concrete mix designs have made many more available and cost effective solutions to your reinforcement needs. Some times all that is needed is an engineered mix for simple floors, patios, driveways, porches and slabs. However, larger structures that support greater weights require more reinforcement and are required by general building codes.

Depending on the structure you are making will be what determines the type of reinforcement needed. Concrete walls require the use of steel rebar. Usually the sticks of rebar are tied together based on an engineered plan. Building codes, structural design and an engineer usually determine how much is needed and how it should be placed in the concrete. The larger the area to support usually means the higher amount of rebar as well as the grade (diameter of rebar or rebar size). Smaller flatwork pieces like residential flat work usually only require an engineered bag mix of concrete, or simple wire mesh. Wire mesh concrete reinforcement is often used when placing a boiler heat system in a driveway for example. This wire mesh must be set just right so as not to puncture the tubes when pouring concrete and to eliminate protruding wire from the concrete slab.

Thicker walls and floors will almost always require mats of rebar (rebar sticks tied together vertically and horizontally in specific lengths and spaced properly based on what it supports). This reinforcement is usually tied to footings that have been poured with sticks of rebar placed into and protruding upward or leaning into the floor to connect the mats together. Reinforcement can be bought pre-bent or bent on site based on need. The reinforcement is usually throughout the entire structure including columns. The higher up and the more to support the more reinforcement and concrete is needed, both in quantity and grade size. Improper placement of reinforcement, lack of reinforcement, incorrect type of reinforcement and inadequate sizing causes weakness, structural damage and protrusion from the structure. Most buildings require an a building inspector to pass off whether or not the proper amount, size, type and placement is correct. Hiring a contractor who is qualified to do it right is very important.

Once the size of the reinforcement is determined how much of it is needed to support the structure you are building? These requirements usually come in the form of an engineered plan stating the bare minimum needed. If you are not sure, hire an engineer to review your needs. They usually state the type that is needed as well. Structures that are exposed to water elements usually require that they be epoxy coated. This epoxy coating is usually a thin layer of epoxy that the rebar is coated with to protect the bar or mats from rusting and give it longevity.

Because reinforcement can get expensive, modern technology is trying to focus on ways to place reinforcement directly into concrete mixes, by the use of engineering mix designs. Engineers are researching the use of graphite in the mix to bond it together and provide reinforcement as well as other chemicals. Progress is advancing at a rapid pace and many different mix types are available. Some builders and engineers require these mixes on jobs in addition to steel reinforcement. They usually require testing of the strength of the mix by pouring core samples to test at a later date to make sure it is not defective. If the strength test is not met to the required standard, it must be removed and replaced until it passes. If reinforcement is not inspected by a building inspector prior to pouring concrete, the building inspector can require you to remove the entire structure and start all over, or bring an imaging device to the job site and ex-ray the structure to see if it was properly placed. Usually great costs are associated with both of these. Concrete is expensive to do over, so it is important to follow building codes and requirements when installing rebar to make sure it is done right the first time.

Concrete reinforcement is an important step when considering the longevity of a structure. In my experience I haven't met a single person or company who wanted to waste their money on buildings or structures that aren't going to last. Too little reinforcement can cause severe structural failure and damage that can be expensive and dangerous. Which, is not worth it in the long run.

Room Acoustics & Home Cinema Rooms

Room acoustics play a huge role in creating a successful home cinema. The best home cinema hardware in the world will fail to perform at its best in a badly designed room.

The main issue in a home cinema tends to be excessive reverberation time - this is the time taken for a sound from a speaker to decay by 60dB below its original level - i.e. the amount of time it takes for a sound to dissipate in the room.

If you can imagine standing in a completely empty room with hard floors and ceilings and clapping your hands, the sound will echo for quite some time and therefore take a long time to decay (it reflects off the walls and floor). Now imagine standing in a carpeted bedroom and clapping your hands, the sound would not echo as much and disappear quite quickly (the bed and the carpet would absorb some of the sound). The bedroom has a lower reverberation time than the original room.

In a home cinema it is generally good to have a shorter reverberation time as if the reverberation time of one syllable overlaps the other it can be difficult to make out speech. The same thing happens with sound from the surround sound speakers - one effect overlaps another resulting in a muddle of sound.

Home Cinema Treatments

There are several ways to treat excessive reverberation time - changing the shape of the room is one. Imagine a square box, a wave comes out of the speaker hits the back wall and comes back 180 degrees on itself - muddled sound. Now imagine a complex shape like Octagon, some waves will still bounce back at 180 degrees but the majority will bounce off in different directions - the sound still exists but all the bouncing will reduce its energy quite quickly (and therefore volume) and keep the sounds distinct.

The other way to treat excessive reverberation is to absorb the wave - acoustic panels consist of acoustic substrate finished in fabric. This tends to be the most practical way to improve the sound in your room and the finishing fabric can be almost any design - improving aesthetics at the same time as the sound. Manufacturers such as Cineak and Cinematech have products available in a variety of sizes and shapes to cater for most situations.

Improving Your Health with a Steam Shower

The evolution of bathroom design has taken on a new dimension with all technological advances in both bath and shower innovations. Not until the last decade daily showers were a quick means of cleansing the body, spending mere minutes in the shower feeling more like a chore rather than an enjoyable and relaxing experience.

According to health and wellness experts finding comfort in the shower by taking the time to unwind and relieve the body and mind of everyday stresses allows the body to replenish and re-energize. With more people living and leading hectic lifestyles in trying to find a balance between full-time work and raising a family often lends itself to insurmountable levels of stress causing physical and emotional fatigue. Until recently the only way to escape and relax was to take a trip to the spa where you could enjoy the soothing comfort of a steam shower or whirlpool bath.

With so many new shower designs available in todays market, bathroom suppliers have seen an increase in shower purchases from electric showers to steam showers. Modern day trends depicts that more homeowners are transforming their existing bathrooms into home spa retreats, but not only for the sole purpose to repose. For centuries steam has been used for medicinal purposes to heal a number of ailments. Since the use of heat and steam helps to soothe and relax tense muscles, arthritis suffers benefit from the use of steam showers by providing relief to sore joints.

Along with the many other added benefits of steam showers, medical professionals say that steam stimulates the lymphatic system increasing blood circulation and speeds up the metabolism which can aid in weight loss and improve the overall look of the body. Among the positive therapeutic affects that a steam shower has is on the immune system causing the body to produce more white blood cells. The increase in cell count is the first defense in fighting off the common cold as well as other diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, influenza, allergies and pneumonia. Similar to a small vaporizer that emits steam into the air, steam showers serve up the same home-based solutions in order to relieve a sore throat, excessive coughing, nasal congestion, and for clearing up fluid in the lungs. Steam showers are also known to flush out the toxins and other impurities from the body through sweat glands which can have a positive affect on the skins appearance; making it appear more youthful and by adds moisture to dry skin.

Unlike conventional showers, one of the great features of a steam shower is that they are one compact unit and can installed wherever there is a water supply making them much more versatile and are leak proof. The two-fold benefits of a luxurious steam shower provide therapeutic relief on the body and can add a modern elegant look to your bathroom.

Home Selling Books - Real Estate Tips

I was talking to a friend of mine, who had just purchased a new home about two months ago and he was practically yelling at me as he was talking about all the problems that he had with his realtor and previous homeowner. He was so mad, he had forgot about the problems he had with the home inspection. My friend was usually a very easy going and calm individual but this had upset him and almost turned him into an irrational person.

As I was calming him down and trying to get to the core of the problem, it seem like he didn't have enough information about buying or selling homes. He was confused with all the paperwork that was involved during the entire process. His real estate salesperson had him sign a contract that wouldn't let him use another realtor for a specific period of time. He really didn't know what he was signing and according to him, it wasn't explained properly to him.

After a couple of weeks of shopping for a new home, he became irritated with the realtor and wanted to end the relationship. Think again, said the realtor as he explained to my friend that they had a binding contract and his current realtor would get a percentage of the transaction, no matter what for that specific period of time. Was my friend mad, he was practically foaming at the mouth as he was telling me about the real estate professional.

It didn't stop here and they don't want to go into a long story about the real estate transaction from purgatory. My friends pain had come from the fact, that he had purchased a home 15 years ago and it was a smooth transaction and he was under the impression that buying and selling homes was a simple process.

I handed my friend a book called "The Consumer's Guide to Home Buying" and asked him if this book would have been helpful, before he started shopping for a home. I was curious because I build websites and do a lot are writing on the Internet. I told him to take the book home and I would get back with him, in a few weeks.

He contacted me the next day and couldn't believe the information he gained, just by scanning through the book in a few hours. He started to get mad at me for not giving him this book, before all the home buying problems occurred. I informed him quite simply that he had never even told me, he was looking for a home.

Can home selling books save you money, you bet they can.

How to Redecorate Your Kids Bathroom and Create a Room They'll Love Taking Baths In

You can approach designing a bathroom for your kids in a lot of different ways and each of these will be totally different than how you'd design a bathroom for yourself or another adult in the family.

In general, children need a place that can be fun, functional, and motivating in order for them to feel comfortable with using that particular room or space in your home. They like to have a place that they can call their own. A bathroom is no different. The following bathroom ideas can be used if you are planning to remodel your kids bathroom.

One of the easiest things you can do is just to paint the walls in bright colors. Children will love this, especially if you let them select their favorite color- they'll feel far more involved for this and love the change even more. Just make sure the color is not too extreme. If you ever decide to sell the home, you may have to repaint before potential buyers will find it appealing. That being said it's just a matter of a coat or two of paint to correct that problem.

If the bathroom has a lot of tiles on the wall then this can cause problems with repainting the room entirely. You can paint over tiles but it's not advisable. If you want to avoid painting over tiles then you can add stencil and stick on patters to help the transformation of your kids bathroom.

In the meantime, have fun with your kids during the remodeling process. Their input will not only help in your decision making, but it will also give them a sense of ownership. After all, this is where they will be spending their bathroom time so make sure they've bought into the whole idea by having them involved as much as is safe for them.

Practical accessories such as toothbrush holders, soap dishes, and towel racks, are also easy and inexpensive bathroom ideas. Many of your kids' favorite movie, comicbook or cartoon characters will have their own bathroom accessory range so why not make this part of the whole process.

You always want to keep safety in mind when thinking of different bathroom ideas for your kids. If you have little ones, a sturdy, low step stool to help them reach the sink is important. The stool can also be used for them to rest their feet when they have to use the toilet - until they've grown out of the need for it. I remember my father making a footrest like that for me when I was about 5 years old.

All accessories should be either shatterproof or plastic to avoid injuries if your kids accidentally drop something. Besides these, other safety concerns that are appropriate for an adult bathroom are also for a child, no matter the age. Make sure that you have a non-slip surface in the bathtub and/or shower - this is an essential item.

You can also get non-slip backings on bath rugs. Grab bars for the shower or bath that can easily screw into the wall are also important. You will need to install anti-scald devices in order to prevent hot water burns. These can be purchased at any home improvement store in your area.

Hopefully this has you started on the path to creating a new look for your kids bathroom that they're just going to love!

Redecorating a bathroom can be daunting. Where do you start? What materials and accessories? If you're looking for more bathroom design ideas then click on over to http://www.bathroomcentral.com. You won't be disappointed.

Leveling Your Floor - Home Repair Tips

If you've ever been in a building where you feel like you are getting pushed to one side and you can't seem to stand up. You have either been drinking too much alcohol or the floor could be sloping. I was just in a store the other day that was full of antiques and glass but I could hardly stand up because the floor was sloping enough to create what I would consider a liability issue to the store owner.

Sloping floors are not going to be that easy to fix and repair. Repairing these floors will require a little skill and it would be a good idea to hire a professional to repair the damage. This is not going to be a simple fix and this is probably the main reason most people never choose to fix their sloping floors.

Fixing these floors will require either pouring a new concrete slab, replacing the wood floor framing members or replacing the actual building foundation itself. No matter how you look at it the sloping floor is going to be a costly item to repair.

What causes a sloping floor? Termite damage or dry rot destroying the wood framing or it could be as simple as a water leak over a long period of time causing the building foundation to sink and become out of level. Poor soil conditions with either too sandy or an expansive clay soil could be the culprit also.

Sloping floors can be damaged from incorrect landscape drainage. This would involve water settling around the foundation of your home and over a period of time the weight of the house along with soil problems can create the building to start sloping to one side.

The number one contributor to a sloping floor again like most damage done to a house is going to be water. Do your best to keep the water away from the house using roof gutters and landscape drains. These items are relatively inexpensive compared to the costs involved in repairing sloping floors.

Home Improvement Tips - Types of Countertops

It used to be that laminate was pretty much your only choice for kitchen countertops. Those days are thankfully long gone but now a homeowner is faced with a variety of choices and wide range of prices available for your kitchen renovation.

Some of the popular choices include:

Ceramic Tile

This remains as a popular and economical alternative that is heat and scratch resistant. It is high maintenance though since it needs to have it's grout sealed regularly to avoid staining.

Concrete

This is a incredibly versatile surface that can be textured and detailed with patterns unlike any other surface. However it is extremely porous and needs to be regularly sealed to avoid stains.

Engineered Stone

This product is made of a quartz composite with colored pebbles or different materials giving its wide range of colors. Texture is usually even and the colors can be reproduced over larger areas. It as extremely durable product that can resist heat and stain.

Granite

Granite is a natural stone. It comes from different regions of the world and can vary widely in color and pattern. It needs to be seamed and requires period sealing to avoid stains. It cannot tolerate high heat from hot pans.

Laminate

House Train a Dog

Does it seem hopeless that your new dog will never learn to use the great outdoors for its bathroom? First, let me start off by saying, "NEVER PAPER TRAIN!" Paper training usually involves newspaper set on the ground IN a designated part of the HOUSE. While the dog quickly associates the newspaper as his/her bathroom, your dog figures that its okay to go in the house. Which is the opposite of what the owner ultimately wants! If a dog is trained in this way, its harder to break their habit if you later try training them to use the outdoors as their bathroom. I like to use a combination of crate training, and the bell technique.

Crate training is pretty straight forward. At night when its time for bed, put your dog in the crate. Make sure the crate isn't too big or too small. Your dog should be able to turn around comfortably. You can also throw a safe toy in there for good measure. Dogs will not soil themselves in their crates. Its a natural instinct of theirs not to dirty their sleeping place. A crate isn't cruel either, dogs are den animals, so the crate makes them feel right at home. Just make sure they don't stay in their crates for unusual amounts of time.

When your dog isn't in the crate when you're at home, the bell technique is perfect. The bell technique consists of hanging a Christmas-like bell from the door (knob) you always let your dog out, at nose height. The first few weeks you have your dog, you MUST keep your eyes on him/her like a hawk. It's imperative to catch your dog in the act of going to the bathroom indoors. A firm ,"NO" will do, quickly walk the dog to the designated door and manually hit the bell with his/her nose and say, "Outside." You MUST be routine with this step. After a few weeks your dog will start running over to the door and hitting the bell with their nose on there own! It's also VERY important to praise your dog when they're doing their business outside with a "good boy", or good girl," in a high pitched voice. All dogs love/respond to high pitched voices! With these techniques, your dog will be using the outdoor soil as their personal bathroom in no time.

I run the blog http://www.littleaboutmuch.blogspot.com, I poke fun of myself for knowing "so little about so much," which is where the blogs title comes from. The point of my blog is to inform people the pros and cons of different subject matter and to review material that I find interesting. I can't leave out that I'm also a dog lover!

Making Your Own Outdoor Water Fountains

Making your own outdoor water fountains has its benefits. You save on purchase costs, moving cost, and installation cost. You get to make something that suits your garden; something that is a unique piece, not available anywhere else. And you get to have a lot of fun doing this on sunny Sunday afternoons when you are in the mood for testing your DIY skills.

Materials Needed

First, you need to source the materials, equipment, and parts for making the fountain. You will need a plastic pool, pump, tubes, sand, and a plastic fountain water spout. The pump should be powerful enough to draw water from the pool into the spout, and throw it high. Depending on your requirement, you can even get decoration pieces such as plants, colorful rocks, shells, and plants. Statues and sculptures sourced from flea markets, garden sales, and online stores can really brighten the pool up.

Selecting The Pump

The pump is the most active mechanism of the fountain. Therefore, you need to select the right pump for the pool and fountain. The pump provides lift and sucks the water by volume. These two measurements must be kept in mind while purchasing supplies for the fountain. Smaller wall or tabletop fountains draw 30 gallons of water per hour. The large fountains need 500 gallons per hour. You need to have an idea of the volume of water in the pool to be able to calculate how much force your pump should apply.

The Procedure

First, the electricity line has to be laid to connect the fountain to the mains. The farther the fountain is from the electricity switchboard, the longer would be the length of cord that you need. Next, you would need to clear space on the ground and dig a trench the size of the pool. Fit the plastic pool into this. Check the level using a carpenter's tool.

Next step is to fit in the decorative fount and do the plumbing. The sculpture is placed in the middle of the pool. A hole is drilled through it so a tube can pass through. Attach the tube to the pump by fitting it into its outlet slot. Fill the pool up. Plug in the pump to the electricity line and start the fountain.

All the major work is done. Now you need to decorate the fountain. Use shells, pebbles, rocks and additional sculptures to create a unique look for your garden. Any old pieces from decoration sets, china, and similar material can be used for creating a fun/elegant/theme-based fountain.

Now your DIY fountain is ready. With a little creativity and almost no cost, you can create spectacular outdoor water fountains for your home.

Using Fire Rated Glass Blocks to Create Safe and Stylish Windows and Walls

If you've got a 60 or 90 minute fire rating requirement and you're looking to enhance the looks of your building as well what product can you use? Answer - a stylish and contemporary option are 60 and 90 minute fire rated glass blocks. In this article you'll learn the following about these products:

The features and benefits of fire rated glass masonry units
Where to use fire rated blocks.

The features and benefits of using fire rated glass masonry units

The main reason to use a fire rated glass block vs. a standard block is to meet UL ratings of 60 and 90 minutes for window assemblies (a standard block has a 45 minute rating). The following are some additional benefits you'll get with these specialized glass units:

1. Transparency, looks, and light transmission - The blocks are available in Vue (see through) and higher privacy patterns (Endura and Decora from Pittsburgh Corning and Wave from Mulia) and provide 75% visible light transmission.

2. Noise reduction - Fire rated blocks have thicker faces of 3/8", " and 3" of solid glass. The thicker face result in an improved sound transmission class to reduce noise of 53 for Solid Vistabrik glass bricks, and 48 for the sixty and ninety minute rated blocks.

3. Added security- Since the fire rated assemblies are mortared together, and the blocks have thicker faces, they have increased impact resistance and are harder for vandals to break through. The faces on these blocks are 50% thicker for 60 minute blocks and 300% thicker for 90 minute blocks than a standard block.

4. Architectural design flexibility - Use one pattern or combine all 3 patterns to create unique designs with increased fire ratings.

5. Bullet and graffiti resistant - The Vistabrik 3" solid glass blocks and bricks can resist penetrations from high impact weapons with .357 magnum and 9 mm bullets. The non-stick glass surface makes it easier to remove graffiti as well.

Where to use fire rated blocks

Since fire rated glass block windows and walls will generally cost about 50 to 100% more than a standard glass block project (and will visually appear the same to someone looking at your building) they are generally used where the additional fire rating capabilities are either required or desired for additional safety. Here are some of the more popular places this product is used:

1. Limited lot line communities where the side walls of adjoining homes are close together - A project in Columbus Ohio is considering 90 minute fire rated Thickset Decora pattern block for condominium style homes that are 12 feet apart from each other. The fire department requires a 90 minute rated window product and the builder wants to make sure all the rooms are light filled and feel open for prospective buyers.

2. Stairwells in schools, hospitals, parking garages, libraries, and homes - Provides light and the feeling of safety.

3. Windows in gymnasiums, homes, factories and other commercial buildings - The blocks are hard to break with gym equipment or in a harsh industrial setting.

4. Building corridors.

5. Multi unit apartment and condominium complexes - more light gets into each unit without sacrificing the tenant or owners privacy.

As you can see fire rated glass blocks can do much more than simply increase fire safety in a building - they can enhance looks, increase privacy, and make a more secure and safe environment as well.

Styling Up Your Outdoor Patio is Tiring Yet EXCITING!

Outdoor events are taking over as the in thing everyone will be up for. You can have twice the fun outside than you do indoors. The cool ambiance will turn everybody's mood into a good one and the fact that it is closer to nature makes it a blast. You need not worry about food, as they are of course within your reach. Just lie back, enjoy the sceneries with friends and family while lying down on patio furniture and the warmth of patio heaters that will surely be relaxing.

Contrary to popular opinions, setting a patio is not that difficult at all. You can have a patio makeover with half the price. All you need is to put in essential pieces of furniture in the patio. You should also remove anything that is distracting to the eye. Setting up a focal point should be for the purpose that it can grab the attention of those who are in the patio. An outdoor market umbrella is essential as it will protect you and the guests from climate changes. As for the temperature at night that can be a bit chilly, an outdoor patio will solve your problem.

Nature's theme is a popular choice because everyone loves being in nature where there is lush greeneries, clean and unpolluted environment. Nature inspired theme will be more comfortable which is one of the reasons why people build patios in the first place. Outdoor market umbrella will provide shades from the piercing rays of the sun at the middle of the day. It can be decorated to appear like giant palm trees that offer shades for lost travelers.

Plants and flowers is an added advantage to creating an ambiance of nature. Flowers can match your preference. There are certain flowers that makes people amazed and interested, on the other hand there are also flowers that can annoy people and make them feel edgy. The plants and flowers would naturally need watering and sunlight. Place them in areas where they can be exposed to sunlight and a bit further from outdoor market umbrella. However, during rainy seasons, they can be placed under the umbrella to avoid them from drowning.

A focal point can be placed in the middle of the patio where everyone could see it when they enter the patio, or at an interesting spot that makes it shine most among the other elements in the patio. The focal point is like a main attraction that catchers everyone's attention and will be well remembered by everyone who came by as the item or structure they'll look forward to the next time they come and visit. A focal point can be a fountain, a painting, a large stone with symbolic meanings, a lush flower garden, or even a stone statue with your own portrait.

The patio covers are important. They are there to help protect your furniture from the damages caused by the weather. Outdoor market umbrella can guard your outdoor furniture from the unexpected weather change and with a portable and easy to install and uninstall, consider your problems solved. The patio heaters also serves you well when you need to lay down or sleep outside even if the air is cool.

Outdoor parties need not be extravagant and filled with too much food that's impossible to totally consume. What's important is your camaraderie with your friends and family, and the bonding moments that will be created and treasured in your outdoor patio event. It's not bad to impress your friends with your patio furniture and decorations, but it's better to amaze them by your willingness to accept them into your home, sharing all you resources just to make them feel at home and at ease.

Some Simple Steps To Paint Your Bathtub

Your bathtub is a mess, chipping and stains all over. So, you're thinking of getting a bathtub paint job done, that's a great idea. You can do it yourself or can employ a specialist to assist you. If you're doing it yourself, here's a few steps that a bathtub paint job would consist of.

You would first have to paint the tub with a primer. This primer goes over the porcelain. This is needed so that the surface is porous and the paint will remain. While painting your bathtub, you rather use a paintbrush as against a roller. A roller may be easier for some to handle, but using a roller in the bathtub is not really convenient and it can be quite a pain at some times. It's advisable that you apply two coats of the base color. For this purpose you should use latex paint. Why use two coats? Well, it will give your bathtub a nice vibrant lool, and make it resilient.

You also have to be mindful of what type of paint your using for your bathtub. It's advisable to use EP Acrylic. This is an acrylic polymer coated paint. The thing that makes this pain ideal for your bathtub is that its high quality and is durable or long lasting. In addition, you can get this paint in an extensive range of colors, thus making it extremely easy for you. You can buy the paint that matches the color of your bathroom walls, or something that complements that color. It's best to use a glossy finish, for your bathtub paint.

It's also good to apply about two base coats of primer and then about two or three coats of the acrylic paint, which is the topcoat. Between each coat, make sure that you leave some time, at least about 30 - 60 minutes. Actually the best way to tell is by seeing if the coat that you applied is tried. Also after you've completed your bathtub paint job, make sure that you wait a while before you take a bath. At least wait for around 24 hours minimum. Sometimes you may have to wait even longer.

Why to Opt For Modern Showers

The foremost purpose of taking a shower is to maintain hygiene in a safe manner. It is easier done that bathing, especially for disabled and elderly people as one require very less effort to step in and out, which in turn presents a lower risk of slipping and falling.

There are many kinds of showers available these days, such as electric showers, power showers and mixer showers.

Electric showers provide instantaneous showering any time for any number of people. They take water directly from a cold water supply and heat it as it is used, so the need for storing hot water does not arise. They are also easy to install, either in traditional bathrooms or in dedicated cubicles.

Power Showers produce a much more powerful spray from the faucets than either electric or over head tank fed mixer showers, as the water pressure is enhanced by a pump that generates extraordinarily powerful flow rates.

Mixer showers do not require electrical connections. They are also are easy to install. For homes with enough supply of hot water, these mixer showers are the best option as they work by mixing together hot and cold water supplied to the desired temperature. Are You Looking For Eco-Friendly Bathroom Remodeling Ideas?

Creating Eco-Friendly Bathroom Designs Are Easier Than You Might Think!

Are you looking for some great bathroom remodeling ideas that are eco-friendly? If so, you will be happy to know that there are many options for you to explore that will allow you to have a bathroom that looks great while also reducing your carbon footprint.

Here are a few of the secrets that bathroom re-modelers use when exploring eco-friendly bathroom designs.

Considering the Furniture

When creating an eco-friendly bathroom design, you should be certain to give thought to the furniture you will include in your space. This includes items such as...

* Bathroom Cabinetry
* Vanity Units
* Bath Panels and Shelving

You can make these items more eco-friendly by choosing those that are made from materials such as sustainable timber, wheat board and bamboo. In fact, bamboo is an excellent material to use in bathrooms because it holds well against moisture and humidity.

In addition to considering the material used to make the bathroom furniture, you should also take a closer look at the sealants and finishes used on the pieces. Ideally, your bathroom furniture should be made with natural, water-based ingredients such as plant oil or other materials that do not contain chemical additives.

Picking the Right Lighting

When it comes to bathroom designs, achieving the right lighting is critical. After all, most people use mirrors in their bathrooms to help them while shaving, putting on makeup and styling their hair. Therefore, you want to have the best light possible to make yourself look good when you get ready to start the day.

By keeping a few eco-friendly bathroom remodeling ideas in mind, you can get great lighting while also lowering your impact on the earth.

Finding ways to let natural daylight into your bathroom is one of the best ways to get great lighting, while reducing your need to use electricity. So, wherever possible, add skylights or solar tubes to your bathroom in order to allow more light to come in.

With the help of bathroom designer software, you can play around with different natural lighting options and come up with a design that works best for you. Where lighting is necessary, choose fluorescent bulbs rather than traditional bulbs. Not only will this help the environment, it will also help you save on your energy bill!

Decorating Your Bathroom

As you explore bathroom remodeling ideas, don't forget about the little things that you add to your space in order to give it character. Soft items such as towels and bathrobes serve a function while also helping to pull together bathroom dcor. Even these items are available in eco-friendly designs. Look for those that are made with...

* Bamboo
* Certified Organic Cotton
* Hemp

You should also look for items that are unbleached and have been dyed with vegetable colorings rather than chemical additives.

Of course, you should also look for water-efficient showerheads, faucets and toilets to save on the amount of water you consume. Just remember to include these items as you create your bathroom designs and you will surely be thrilled with the results!

This is much less intensive than many other home improvement project, and homeowners who decide to do a basement finishing project get as much as eighty-five percent of their investment back in many cases. One important element to any finished basement is the bathroom. Basement bathroom remodeling projects are excellent for just about any home and just about any family. If you're living in an older single family residence with just one bathroom, adding another one is one of the best choices you can make.

People love the space and comfort that a finished basement has to offer. Any basement can become a rec room, entertainment room, extra or guest bedroom, library, office, and even your own personal fitness center. You just have to decide how your finished basement will best benefit. Remember to plan with care, and don't forget to include a basement bathroom remodeling project along with your other remodeling plans. No one wants to have to run up and down stairs whenever they need to use the bathroom, especially if there's something going on in the basement. Making your basement bathroom friendly, usable and accessible is important and will increase convenience while adding value.

It's not as hard as you think to add an extra room to your basement. You can even do it yourself if you happen to have the required experience and knowledge. If you know how to do part of the work, but aren't trained as an electrician or plumber, that doesn't mean your basement bathroom remodeling ideas have to fall by the wayside, either. Just contact a professional, talk to him or her about your plans, and have only the work you don't know how to do done by a pro. Remember that in some areas, local codes may require you to have your work signed off on by professionals, or even to have the major work done by someone else. It's important to know as much as you can about code in your area before you even begin to plan. That'll help you avoid legal entanglements later.

Some of the things you'll need to do for any basement bathroom remodeling project include using water resistant paints and materials, making sure the flooring is something that won't attract moisture, mold, and mildew, and being certain you're doing the plumbing and drains correctly. Installing a bathroom in a basement that's located below the drains can be tricky, often requiring use of special fixtures or additional mechanisms. This doesn't have to cost a lot, but you should know what you need well in advance. That way, you won't find yourself wasting time or money by using a solution that won't work for your situation.

A basement bathroom remodeling project should be part of any finished basement. It'll make using the finished space much more pleasant, and it'll add even more to your home's value. Since this is one of the least expensive renovations you can do in your home, there's no reason not to take on a well planned basement bathroom project. It could really make a big difference in your home.

Home Renovations Go Better With Planning

Many people are choosing to improve their own homes rather than selling them. Improving your home's exterior, for example, can improve your home's value and actually be a fun home renovation project.

There are many ways to improve a home's exterior. New gutters, window trims, and siding are all seemingly small details, but they can dramatically change your home's appearance. Other people add patios, shrubbery or other landscaping details. Some people even add brick pavers, gazebos and other touches.

Most people can do any of these exterior projects if they keep some factors in mind. The most important of these is planning. Before you start any project, plan out exactly what you want to do. Figure out how much it will cost and how long it will take. Do you have the right tools and supplies? Do you know how to use them? Do you need to rent the equipment? Does the rental company have it available on the days you need it? What about when the project is done? What maintenance will have to be performed. That new gazebo may look pretty now, but will you have time to repaint or restain it to keep it looking nice next year?

Even if you are just painting the exterior trim, be sure you have planned to follow all the necessary preparatory steps, such as cleaning and sanding the surface to be painted. Even though the home improvement shows depict their teams going in and accomplishing several jobs at once, don't be tempted to follow suit. Their professionals, you're not.

If you don't have the answers to any of your plannig questions, get the answers before you start. There is no shortage of help. Home improvement stores, building contractors, the internet and even local community colleges all can be fonts of information for you. They may have tips that you never even considered that can help you save time and money or make your work more professional looking.

When planning out your project, be sure to plan enough time so you can go one section, one step at a time. Don't proceed to the next step until you are done with the current one. If you have a limited amount of ladders, plan things out so you do one side of the building at a time, so you don't have to move the ladder back and forth, wasting time in the process.

Also, try to have a backup plan. If you plan to paint a certain day, what if it rains? Is there a part of the project you could do instead?

As with any other project, home renovation goes best with planning and practice. Once you've accomplished some small projects, you will have the confidence to tackle bigger ones. Your home will soon look even better and you will be proud of what you've accomplished.

Injection Waterproofing - Home Repair Tips

Injection waterproofing is often used to fill and seal cracks and crevices. The material is most often made from a polyurethane compound. The compound is lightweight and expands up to twice its original size when applied to a surface. Many non-toxic and environmentally safe products are available at home improvement stores nationwide. Injection waterproofing is used mainly in foundation crack repairs.

In most foundation cracks, a polyurethane injection can seal the opening. In some smaller cracks it may be apparent that a sealant was used because it may be difficult to evenly inject the compound. Single caulking style cartridges and the dual side-by-side cartridge systems are the types of injection waterproofing compounds available for retail purchase. Both of these are manually injected and easy to pump.

When using an injection waterproofing method, it is important to keep the area dry. Temporarily block any flowing water to the area, and clean and dry the area as needed. Experts say that in the case of water flowing through a hole, you can temporarily caulk the hole with candle wax, modeling clay or plumbers putty. If the cracks are in narrow or hard-to-reach places, you can use a flexible hose attached to the injector nozzle.

Whatever waterproofing system your leakage problem requires, be sure to do your research. If you choose to make this a do-it-yourself project, make sure you know where your leaks are coming from and the proper method to repair them. When purchasing waterproofing materials you should make sure you are buying the appropriate product for your needs. The National Association of Waterproofing and Structural Repair Contractors (NAWSRC) has tons of information on waterproofing. Whether or not you decide to hire a contractor, this organization can help you from beginning to end.

Protect Your Lumber Inventory With Cantilever Racking

Precision inventory control and product protection are two things that are vital to recession proofing any business involved in the distribution of lumber or the manufacture of wooden products like furniture. Cantilever lumber racks offer a very low-cost means to accomplishing both, and they can support up to several thousand pounds in weight.

These systems are best custom built, because the capacity and size of a cantilever lumber rack will be determined by product length, type of lumber cut, and the total weight capacity supported by the arms. Precise calculations have to be made to ensure evenly distributed loading, uneven loads will reduce the total capacity of the rack by 50 percent.

Cantilever lumber racks are intended to organize and protect cuts of lumber by keeping them off the floor and providing an efficient method of categorizing various dimensions and types of wood. Cantilever lumber racks can be built with single or double-sided towers. If base assemblies are stackable, it allows towers to be joined together to create entire rows of storage.

This is an extremely efficient method of space management in crowded warehouses. Cantilever lumber racks take up much less space than pallet racks, and so long as they are anchored properly to the concrete floor and built with appropriately proportioned columns, arms, and braces, they can be built very tall so as to minimize their consumption of horizontal floor space and make it easier for forklifts to access their contents.

Cantilever racks are vital to the lumber industry. Almost all cuts of timber feature a variety of lengths, widths, and thicknesses. Organizing these cuts by sheer dimensions alone is difficult enough. When you consider the added difficulty in categorizing lumber by wood type, it quickly becomes evident how difficulty inventory control without a system of organization and a convenient method of retrieval.

Wood is also very vulnerable to impact and moisture and requires some special storage considerations. Even indoors in very hot, humid climates, warehouses can be too humid for the long-term storage of lumber, and leaving boards, planks, and sheets on the floor invites damage, mold, and safety concerns. Cantilever lumber racks both elevate and separate lumber by size and type, placing it closer to fans or other forms of ventilation, or making it possible to cover the lumber with plastic or tarpaulins in order to prevent it from becoming damp.

The most common type of cantilever rack that is used to store lumber is the structural rack. Structural cantilever racking is used for more heavy-duty applications such as lumber and pipe storage. Structural components generally include structural columns and bases, roll-formed arms, horizontal bracings, X-Bracings, and hardware used to mount the units.

X-braces can be either 48 inches or 60 inches wide. Columns, as we have already mentioned, can be either single-sided or double-sided. Many lumber yards prefer to use double-sided cantilever lumber racks because this allows them to create rows for forklifts to move through. It also makes better use of space to build this type of system if there is sufficient area in which to do so.

The Benefits of Installing Gable Vents in Your Home's Attic

Gable vents are a great alternative, or an addition, to your home's ventilation system. They typically reside near the peak of your roof, on the gable ends of the house. Frequently they are used as the sole means for keeping the air moving in your attic, however sometimes they are used in conjunction with ridge vents and soffits vents.

It is important that your home's attic have a venting system to help bleed off the heat and humidity in the attic during the summer months, and moist stagnant air during the winter months. The heat of the summer, if left in the attic, will counterbalance the effort of the air conditioning system on the upper level, and can cause structural damage to the home. If the attic heat is not removed, the life of the roof shingles can be dramatically shortened, which could lead to roof leaks and water damage to the home. Also, anything stored in the attic can become damaged due to the excessive heat build up.

If the stagnant moist air is not taken out of the attic during the winter months, condensation can form in the attic. This condensation can then cause mold and mildew to grow in the attic. The formation of mold and mildew in the home can cause health problems for the occupants and can be extremely expensive to remove.

Gable vents are a great alternative to ridge vents, as they can add some charm to the home. Gable vents are passive venting systems that come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Rectangular and octagon shaped ones are fairly common. They are constructed out of wood, vinyl or metal and have slats or louvers on them to help prevent wind, rain and snow from entering the attic. In addition, they typically have an insect screen on the back side of them (the side that faces the attic) to prevent insects, bats and other rodents from entering the attic space. Some of the more elaborate models have fans that sit on the backside of them to help push the attic air out of the home, and to draw new air into it. For example, one side of the home may have a gable vent that sucks new air into the attic, and the other side, a gable vent to push air out of the attic.

A Basement Ceiling Home Makeover

When I helped by buddy redo his basement, he wasn't sure what the best type of ceiling to use would be. Some of the choices available were traditional drywall, tongue and groove boards, acoustic ceiling tiles, and a drop-type ceiling. We didn't know which to choose, so we looked at each type a little closer.

A drywall ceiling would be a lot of work. Almost all of the pipes and ductwork would have to be rerouted to fit into joint cavities or out to the edges of the room. If there were still things hanging below the bottom of the ceiling joists, we'd have to build boxes around them. Wherever we needed extra strength, we'd have to nail up furring strips.

In using a drywall ceiling it's important to use the furring and framed boxes to make a strong backing to hold the finishing materials. Although drywall was a low-cost option, we knew there was still a lot of work after the sheet rock was hung, and we weren't real excited about it.

Acoustic ceiling tiles are another great option. They are small enough to be easy to handle and cut. Ceiling tiles are installed by stapling them onto furring strips. In order to do that, once again, we'd need to move everything in order to have a flat surface to staple them to.

The next option we considered was T1-11 tongue and groove boards. This project would once again entail moving pipes and ducts, and it was also the most expensive option we looked at. My friend decided that this just wasn't the look he wanted for his ceiling, so we moved on.

Last on our list was a standard drop ceiling. This is one of the easiest ways to cover ceiling joists, but you still have to cut and hang rails for the ceiling framework, and my friend didn't like the fact that this type of ceiling looked like it belonged in an old office building, not his newly-decorated basement. Besides, drop ceilings were one of the more expensive options we'd looked at.

We'd worked our way completely through our list, and we still hadn't come up with a solution. Then, while shopping one day, he noticed the ceiling of the store he were in. It looked just like his basement ceiling, but a whole lot better. He had to ask the owner what they had done to achieve the look. The owner said all they'd done is clean the pipes and ductwork thoroughly, gave them a coat of primer, and used a sprayer to paint the whole works the same color. It looked amazing, and my friend knew he had found his ceiling.

Once we got started our one concern was whether or not we could paint electrical and gas lines. We solved the problem by calling a professional electrician to ask for his opinion. You know, this ceiling was easier to do than any of the other options, and it cost far less, but it looked super. Before trying this option in your own home, make sure to call a professional electrician like we did, just to make sure it's safe. So I guess the moral of the story is, if you don't like standard ways of doing things, start thinking outside the box.
