How to Profit from a Concrete Roof Tile Business

Concrete Roof Tile Business:

During the 2004 summer season, storms plagued the United States. Damages from the Hurricanes in Florida alone sent resources in the southern states scrambling. The shortage of qualified roofing professionals and supplies were felt immediately. Roofers from all over the United States began hunting down supplies and heading south. There were also many people who saw a roofing business opportunity and invested in roof tile businesses.

Concrete roof tile has gone through some evolution over the years. Initially, the tiles were large, like sheets of corrugated roofing. The composition for the size did not hold up well, and lasted only about ten years. When the tiles were made smaller, it was found that the roof tiles held up twenty plus years and were tougher than the larger sheets.

Another benefit of concrete roof tile is the ability to stain them, giving them the aesthetic flexibility that consumers want. Their durability and ease of installation are both benefits. Concrete roofing tiles provide great protection from heavy rain, hot sun, and strength. You can also be assured there is little risk of your tiles blowing off in high winds. The tile's size and composition are resistant to breakage as well.

Concrete roofing tile can be produced with a small shop and small investment. This is an industry that is being used all over the world. Typical start up costs, not including land and buildings, can cost around one thousand dollars. Equipment can be purchased from hardware and concrete shops locally, or online. Supplies and mixes can be obtained the same way.

There are typically two types of concrete roofing tile, both of which will require some learned skill to produce effectively. The first type is the fiber reinforced concrete tile. As the name implies, tiles are reinforced with sisal or coir fibers. The second type of tile is made with no fibers at all. These are known as micro-concrete roofing tiles.

Quality control will be an important issue when producing roofing tiles. Micro-concrete roofing tiles will require a great deal of care and precision during the entire process of production or sub standard tiles will be produced. The standards for fiber-reinforced tiles can be produced with slightly less rigorous attention to detail, but you still want a good quality tile to make it to the roofer who buys them.

Equipment requirements are actually minimal, but should be selected carefully for quality. A tile vibrator machine, moulds, plastic sheets, batching boxes, a water curing tank, and a table to work on are about the essentials. Your supplies should include sand, water, and cement. The sand should be of the best quality, having a regular grain-size grading. Make sure that the grain size is not too silty, as this will provide sub standard tiles.

Once you learn the techniques of producing good quality tile, you will be able to market your tile to local roofers and hardware stores. Working on your sales pitch will be important, especially defining the benefits of concrete roofing tile. The benefits of concrete tile are easy to explain and should make for a great sales pitch to perspective clientele.

Concrete roof tile production can also lead to concrete roof tile repair. If you have roofing experience, you will be ahead of the game. Installing concrete roofing tile is no more difficult than most other roofing materials. Always have extra tiles on hand to be able to assist with repair jobs.

A concrete roof tile business is ideal for someone willing to make the educational investment. Most of the time involved will be in learning to produce good quality tile. Once you have established your techniques, you should have no trouble in selling your tiles on the roofing market!

Know How to Find Healthy Koi

Are you planning to raise Koi fish? If you decide to do so, the best plan is to learn as much information about them as you can before your buy any. With many Koi selling for $100 or more, it doesn't make sense to go around willy-nilly buying them when you have no clue what to look for in prime Koi fish.

Your best bet is to see what kind of pricing is available on the internet, and also check with any local dealers to see where you will get the best buys and the healthiest fish. If you buy from the internet, check the shipping costs. Sometimes shipping fees are greater than the value of the fish. One problem with buying Koi from eBay is that you have no idea how healthy the fish are, or how well cared for they are. The person selling Koi on eBay may also be clueless about the value or quality of any particular fish. When you purchase the Koi in person, you have the opportunity to examine the fish closely and check for injuries, disease or other problems.

If you decide to buy Koi locally, you should check with as many Koi specialists beforehand as you can. A high school kid working at the local pet store is unlikely to have the expertise necessary to help you make the best choice in Koi fish. A longtime Koi specialist is more likely to be able to help you make the ideal purchase.

If you purchase Koi locally, the dealer will probably put the fish in a plastic bag. When you put the fish in the car, you can decrease the trauma to the fish by putting the plastic bag into a box or an ice chest, and placing it somewhere in the car where it will receive the smoothest ride. The less movement the fish feels during the ride, the better.

A few things to look for in a healthy and quality Koi are:

  • The head remains fairly level in the water when the fish swims
  • The body has a nice plump oval shape
  • The head is nicely rounded
  • There is a lack of inflammation
  • There are no scars, scratches or other injuries
  • The fish does not remain still or listless in the water
  • There is no splotching
  • The eyes are clear
  • There are no torn or ripped fins
  • The fins are held evenly at the sides
  • The fish with clear distinct markings are often the most valued

Remember that this is an incomplete list of what to look for in quality Koi. You should learn all you can about these beautiful fish before making purchases. Try to find to finest Koi fish available if you plan to breed and sell them.

Five Basic Considerations For Improved Home Security

Of all the possessions a person may come to own over the course of their life, none will be as important and cherished as their very own home. No other possession has come to be imbued with such transcendental notions of worth and importance as the home, which has passed from being a mere object to being a concept, an ideal. Given this incredible appreciation for having one's very own home, it is no surprise that more and more people across the country choose to invest in a home security system every year-there is just no way to feel comfortable, to sleep well at night, without a comprehensive and professionally installed security system. But it's not enough to just contract any run of the mill provider, and it is also not alright to assume that your provider (even the best provider) will be responsible for any and every aspect of your home's security. With these realities in mind, here are five basic considerations to always have present that will help you guarantee the effectiveness and consolidation of your home security.

1) Pick the right company. As has been mentioned, it is not good enough to just choose any old company working in the security field-in fact, many such companies lack staff that are professionally trained in the field, and instead contract third parties that have no training either but that are legally allowed to run monitoring centers. Your provider should be the employer and sole proprietor of every component of your home security system, from the people running the monitoring centers to the live dispatchers themselves to all the different components installed in your home. The larger the operation, generally the higher the quality of protection being provided, so look for a company with more than three or four monitoring centers and millions of customers across the country.

2) Upgrade your system as much as you can. Don't just go with the cheapest plan, but make sure you are receiving all the benefits modern technologies have to offer. Make sure your home security system is both wireless and digital, as anything else is obsolete and will expose you to risks that you should not be exposed to at this point in time. Make sure you have backup communications options, like two-way voice intercom capabilities in your keypad as well as backup cellular tower communications capabilities to reach your monitoring center (in case your land line goes down).

3) Maintain your property. The area around your home is your responsibility to clean, and your home security provider won't be there to cut down dead trees, remove excessive undergrowth, and clear other possible fire risks. Also, you need to make sure you have used fire resistant roofing materials in your home.

4) Leave without making it obvious. Whenever you go on vacation or take an extended leave of absence from home, do your best to cover this fact over using deceptive techniques that will make criminals think you are still home. If possible, use a timer to trip lights in your main entrance and one or two rooms with windows facing the street at around dusk. Disconnect your phones or set the ringer to the lowest possible volume, and do not leave notes on your front door that make your absence completely obvious.

5) Equip all external doors properly. Having the right kinds of locks on all doors leading to the outside is absolutely crucial, even when these doors are being controlled by your alarm system. A minimum of one-inch deadbolts on all exterior doors is advisable.

Your best deterrent to home invasions and break-ins is an ADT alarm system. Don't wonder whether your loved ones and valuables are at risk. Get peace of mind with ADT alarms.

The Importance of Visiting a Showroom Before Choosing Your Siding

Before purchasing anything for your home it is important to make sure that you know the product that you are purchasing. One of the best ways to do this is to visit a showroom. Most contracting companies, or at least the ones that are worth using, will have a showroom that has displays of the products that it offers to its customers.

A showroom is usually used for the purpose of letting customers find and view exactly what they are in the market for purchasing for their home. It also allows them to look at a variety of different options so that the one that appeals to them most can be purchased for their home.

A showroom can be defined as a space in which products are displayed that are for sale. When speaking it terms of a contracting company, the products that are usually on display are examples of construction options that can be performed on your home. Some of the contracting projects that would be on display are paint jobs, windows, decks and patios, sunrooms and porches, roofing, railings, and of course any type of siding that your home may need.

Many contracting companies that are top of the line will have the biggest selection that homeowners can find, just so that each of their individual needs is met. A showroom that has a large selection of siding will have an extensive collection of fiber cement siding, vinyl siding, wood siding, and any other variety that their customers may need.

The people that work in a contracting showroom will more than likely be contractors themselves, or at least those that have a vast knowledge of what goes into installing the products on a home.
It is a good idea to have an expert contractor in a showroom so that when homeowners/possible customers have questions, the answers to their questions can be answered appropriately.

Choosing the siding, or any other exterior part of your home, can be a tough decision. The more choices that you have and the more of an experienced contracting company that you use, the better chance you have for making a smart, lasting purchase. Using a company that has a showroom that can show you everything they have to offer is a great way to go when making this decision.

Solar Power For Homes - The Future is Now

You're probably hearing a lot these days about solar power for homes, especially with the economy in such bad shape and with the cost of energy soaring through the roof. Yet if you are like most people, the thought of switching from the so-called "traditional" energy sources like natural gas, electricity, and oil leaves you feeling a bit apprehensive. You can't help but wonder: Are there really any advantages? Doesn't solar power cost a lot o maintain? What about power outages? What about the hassle of installing a solar-powered device in my home?

The good news is that solar power for homes offers more advantages than you might think. First of all, you will experience the sheer joy of watching your monthly electric bills actually decrease. In this day and age where people are struggling just to pay the mortgage, it is nice to know that there is at least one cost that can actually go down, and all you need is to harness the natural power of the sun. Andy you'll probably feel good about shelling out less for foreign energy.

Solar power for homes can also alleviate another big problem associated with traditional energy sources: the huge cost associated with a lengthy power outage. If you've ever experienced an outage after a severe thunderstorm, you know that this can cost you hundreds of dollars in food spoilage. And in the winter, it can often take days for repair crews to get around to all the trouble spots. In the meantime, your household pipes could freeze, resulting in extensive damage, not to mention your having to endure icy temperatures from the loss of heat.

And you might think that solar power for homes creates a lot of headaches when it comes to installation and maintenance. But what's great about solar power is that there is very little wiring involved. Outdoor solar lights, for example, are equipped with sensors so that they will automatically go on and off as needed. There is no electrical switch involved. And there is nothing to refill, so gone are the days of having your heating oil tank go dry during the coldest days of winter.

As we fall deeper into a crippling recession and the dependency on foreign sources of energy continues to become an even more expensive and risky proposition, alternative sources like solar power continue to look better and better. Solar roofing is one of the best sources of solar power. You can visit our website to learn more about solar roofing.

Repair LCD Power Supply The Easy Way

Troubleshooting LCD monitor power supply pack is easier than the crt monitor power supply. It is small and compact and usually has only one output which is 12 volt and range from 2 ampere to over 4 ampere. Some designed have 18 and 24 volts also. Nowadays most LCD power supplies are build into the main board such as the Dell E151FP LCD Monitor while the older type were separated as power pack module.

The power pack module type is easy to diagnose because you can replace another working unit just to make sure is the power pack that giving problem. You may also use an external dc power supply to power up the LCD to confirm if the power pack is faulty. If you do not have the external dc power supply, you can always use this method to isolate the problem especially the symptoms are no power, low power and power blink. Using the rear light bulb (12 volt) from a car and connect it to the power pack output jack. If it light brightly then the power pack is okay. If it blink or dim the power pack have problem. Why have to use this method to test it? Because, if there are components shorted or leaky at the LCD main board, it will affect the power supply performance.

From experienced, most of the LCD power supply problems whether in the power pack or built into main board were due to the failure of electrolytic capacitors (most probably due to heat) in the primary and secondary section. Most of the capacitors have a high ESR which causes the power supply to produce low output, blink or no power at all. Typical value electrolytic capacitors in the primary side are 47 and 100 micro farad 50 Volt and the secondary sides are 1000 to 2200 micro farad 25 volt. Sometimes you can see the capacitor top casing became bulge and the sleeve that covered the capacitor casing turned into darker color like brownish.

The power section in some of the LCD screen are still using the UC3842 pulse width modulation (pwm) ic. This type of ic is quite easy to find in the market compare to some power ic which is very difficult to get. Samsung 153V LCD monitor is using the TOP247F power ic which is quite easy to troubleshoot if power fail in this model. Some power pack that came in only have minor burnt and after cleaning it and replaced the fuse, it will work as good as the new one.

Troubleshooting LCD power supply is not that difficult provided if you know how a power supply work. If you are unsure of how to troubleshoot power supply, I urge you to read all my power supply articles at the power supply page. I will continue to post more power supplies articles at that page and hope you could drop by more often to check out my website.

3 Ways to Avoid Scams With Credit Repair Services

While the majority of credit repair companies and services are highly reputable, there are other companies that are not as well represented in this area. It is up to you, the individual who will use their services, to choose a company that is most likely to help you to repair your credit report. There are countless errors you can make, though. No one wants to invest a sizable amount of money into a company that does not do as they say they will, or worse, makes the situation bad. Therefore, it is up to you to ensure you select the best company for the job.

To enable you to accomplish this, look at these three ways you can avoid the scams and find reputable credit repair services to work with.

1: If They Promise Too Much They Are Not Being Honest

Should a company promise you that they can remove all negative items from your credit report, legally, they are misguiding you. It is impossible to guarantee this. Perhaps it is possible to remove these items, assuming there are legitimate reasons to do so, but this would be an absolutely rarity. Avoid companies that promise more than they can deliver to you.

2: They Want All The Money Up Front

While most legitimate credit repair services will require that you invest some money upfront for their services, a large payment upfront can be worrisome. A reliable company may even allow you to do things like make payments over the duration of your working with them. Always read through contracts, too, before you sign them or agree to any payment. This will ensure you can walk away if they are not doing what they have promised to do for you.

3: Research Them To Learn Who They Are

There are many ways to learn about a company. As someone who is investing not only time and money into a credit repair service but also the care of your credit report, you definitely need to know all you can about these companies before you agree to work with them. This is a must. To accomplish this, use the Better Business Bureau or use credit repair forums to help you to track down any type of reference you can find. Ultimately, this will make a huge difference in your confidence in the company, too.

There are scams out there on the web and many of them are going to take your money and run. But, the majority of credit repair service companies are legitimate companies who just want to work with you to improve your credit report as you need them to. Take some time to do your homework and learn about the company prior to deciding that you want to work with them. Ultimately, this will make the biggest improvement in your end result, too. Don't decide that all credit repair services are bad because of these few bad guys. Instead, find the right company and trust them to take care of your needs.

Repair Your Broken Xbox 360 Red Rings on Your Own!

Let me tell you about my experience of purchasing the one game that I had waited what seemed like eons to play. So I get home from the store with my new copy of everyone's favorite car stealing franchise and feverishly rip open the package to get out the prized disc inside. I turn on my 360 and pop in the disc. It spins in the tray and nothing comes up. Uh oh!

Guess what happens next. Red Ring of Death! My 360 decided to take a dump at the worst absolute time possible. It was worse than a nightmare. I tried all sorts of different things and nothing worked.

You have been here yourself I take it? Oh you know how frustrating it is. I couldn't believe that the 360 has done this to me multiple times but of all the times to do it it does it now. I have had enough.

Here are some quick tips to try if your system red rings.

First, remove any game that is in the system and power the unit off. Let it cool down for a bit and then try turning it back on after it has had a while to sit. If luck is shining on you your system may boot and start to work properly.

Second, make sure that the console is not sitting on top of or under any other components such as a receiver or DVD player. These can greatly increase the heat that is around the unit. This heat runs the risk of melting the soldering inside the system which is the main cause of the red rings of death.

Heat is a major issue with the Xbox 360s. Microsoft has since switched to a different chipset that runs much cooler, but there are a lot of consoles out there that may still suffer from overheating issues.

Check out the Xbox360Repair Guide!

You might wonder how hiring a company for quality web design services helps your business. This can be clearly understood by the series of advantages professional web design services provide as follows:

Southern California web design companies employ expert and skilled web designers who possess technical expertise in website designing. A technically sound website is a very strong marketing tool that has a tremendous effect on the buying behavior of the customers. These designers keep themselves equipped with the latest technical know-how in order to stay ahead of competition from other web design companies.

Just having a good looking website does not ensure a guaranteed increase in web traffic and sales. The web designers incorporate marketing techniques in the web development process that suits your business' needs and requirements.

Professional design services provide greater flexibility to an online business. After thoroughly analyzing your business, these professionals come up with solutions that satisfy your business needs using specific technologies.

Getting help from web design companies leads to improvisation of existing plan and design of promotional materials. You'll receive customized marketing for newer websites as well as for existing ones.

Web development is a very time consuming process. Devoting large amounts of time on it might prove to be a hurdle for smooth functioning of smaller organizations. Hiring a web design company would save time and resources for in-house software development.

A website that is designed well, making use of white hat SEO techniques , stands greater chances of scoring high in major search engine results. They are most likely to get indexed in search engines, leading to better web traffic.

Websites that are easy on usability and navigation are preferred by visitors. Such sites give the required information to users in less time, and have better chances of generating a sale.

Finding Homes Using the Internet - Home Shopping

You can simply type the words real estate or homebuying into any search engine on the World Wide Web and you will come up with hundreds, maybe even thousands of websites that are extremely helpful and full of great information. Like the one you're on right now.

Finding homes with the internet, combined with a skilled real estate salesperson, provides you with the most effective technology available today. Most websites start out, having you select a state you would like to search in and then, select a city, with your price range.

By answering their questions, this narrows the search down to all of the homes available in the area. The internet has made home shopping very simple. Considering what you had to go through in the 1970s. You found a realtor or by looking in the yellow pages, sometimes you found a good realtor and if you are lucky, maybe you would find you a good home.

Most of the time, the first homes you would look at, were owned by the real estate professional you were working with.

There are however a couple of problems with using the internet to find your dream home. Some of the verbage used and photographs taken can create a wonderful illusion of a tropical paradise but the reality, it's a regular home in a decent neighborhood.

Some of these photos are taken by skilled photographers who take advantage of every angle and tend to give an illusion of grander. When you actually start driving around and looking at these homes, only then will you get a reality check, of what the home actually looks like. You'll get used to it.

After you've looked at a few of your future dream homes, you will get a better idea of what I'm talking about with these wonderful pictures and the extraordinary home descriptions like "Beautiful Three Bedroom House with an Ocean View." When reality it's a two-bedroom house with an extra closet for the third bedroom and the ocean is 45 miles away, but you can see it on a clear day if you actually climb to the top of the largest tree on the property.

Take your time when searching for your dream home and don't let any one push you into making a decision if you're not ready. If you find your real estate professional a little too aggressive or pushy, get out of your contract, if you've signed one and find another, more helpful real estate salesperson to help you with your home purchase.

Greg Vanden Berge is working on the internet to promote the education for creating simple to follow guides and home building books to help professional building contractors as well as the weekend warriors. He has just finished a home buyers guide to take some of the frustration out of home shopping

Small Basement Remodeling

Space is a common housing issue especially in big city living. As the song popularized by Frank Sinatra goes, I want to be a part of it... New York, New York. Most everybody still wants to experience and live through the action of the never-sleeping city. So if you do live in New York, there is still another option to consider other than just learning to live with how things are. The answer to your space crunch lies through looking into the possibilities unused areas has to offer. This makes small basement remodeling one of the best home improvement projects to undertake.

Why small basement remodeling?

- When thinking of adding square footage to your home's living area, this is a more cost-effective alternative than having a home addition where you would need to extend. This would cost you only a fraction of what you will be spending on the later with most or all of the same features. One of the reasons for the great savings is that the structural necessities are already there like the ceiling, flooring, and walls.

- Another benefit for undertaking a small basement remodeling is the ideal location of the area that promotes fewer hassles posed by home improvement works to the family's daily living.

- Since the nature of the space is underground; it is typically warm during colder months and cooler on summer. This factor helps you enjoy the small basement remodeling project results with less energy costs.

There are many ways that you could come up with a finish your small basement remodeling and this depends on your personal needs and preferences. The isolation and originally compact masonry of the place makes it ideal to be turned into a home office, playroom for the younger children, game or recreational room, home theatre or an exercise area. Because plumbing is readily available and easily accessible, the area can also excellently make up for a sauna, additional bathroom, or large custom shower. Other popular small basement remodeling ideas include: a wet bar, kitchenette, and additional room for guests.

When we think about our small basements, the most natural thing to come into out minds is their dungeon-like features. To bring out the most in our remodeling project, you can play with certain elements to make the space as inviting, comfortable and more spacious to look at.

- This area would naturally require heavy lighting compared to most areas in the house. You can provide fixtures promoting intense light as well as maximize the use of windows to let in more natural light.

- Carpets have been a popular choice but are you aware that tiles could do better as flooring? Aside from the durability that it offers, it is also low maintenance. As your small basement is prone to moisture and water problems, this would serve as the better alternative. To make up for the hardness and help with the over-all room design, you can also put beautiful area rugs.

- Light paint colors, horizontal designs and diagonal patterns are great in making the small basement remodeling finish seem much wider.

Can BedBugs Carry Disease?

One seemingly unanswered question about bed bugs is whether or not they can carry disease. In most cases, public health departments consider this as impossible, hence their usual classification as a public nuisance rather than a public health danger.

The question though, as far as health departments are concerned, appears to be split into two definite parts. First, do bedbugs carry disease? Second, can they transmit disease? It seems like a very fine line but there is a distinct difference between the two questions.

Science is very strict about it's use of certain terms and "transmits disease" is certainly one of those terms. BB's do "carry disease" in that it is generally accepted that they will retain disease picked up from their host's blood in their bodies. Yet to date, no study has proven that those diseases get back out of the BB and into a new victim when the bug feeds again.

This conclusion seems to indicate that, unlike mosquitoes or ticks, BBs do not then transmit any of the organisms that can cause disease in humans. The concern of transmission seems to involve more the fluid in the BB than the bug itself.

So the question then becomes, if a bed bug is crushed, deliberately or by accident, does the BB fluid carry the possibility of carrying disease? There was one study where infected BB fluid was injected into some rabbits. The rabbits then caught the disease.

But that only happened because there was a man in a white coat and a syringe. Can it happen in a normal living environment? That seems to be the real question.

The bottom line appears to be that while in normal situations BB's will not transmit disease they can carry it and if for no reason other than that if you have a bedbug infestation they should be exterminated as quickly as possible.

Get rid of these nasty little bugs. Check out Bob Current's website http://www.bedbugfacts.info for help.

How to Look After Patio Furniture

Brand new patio furniture is an asset to any home and looks gorgeous sitting on your patio. Very quickly however it will start to look dirty and the worse for wear if you don't look after it. The problem is that patio furniture is constantly exposed to both weather and pollution. If you look after it however, your furniture will last for years. Here's how to keep it looking good.

1. Regular Cleaning

If you brush any dirt off your furniture and give it a weekly wipe with a damp cloth it will go a long way towards keeping your furniture in good condition.

2. Extra Cleaning

If your furniture has become extra dirty or you haven't been giving it a weekly wipe, wash your furniture down using  a sponge and soapy water and then rinse and allow it to dry. White plastic furniture may need a mild bleaching agent in the water but other than that no harsh chemicals should be needed - just good old fashioned elbow grease.

3. Oil wooden Furniture

If you have bare natural hardwood furniture such as teak treat it with oil regularly following manufacturer's instructions to keep the wood in good condition.

4. Shine Metal Furniture

Use car polish or wax to give a sheen to tough aluminum furniture

5. Re-apply paint or lacquer

Where wooden or wrought iron furniture has a lacquered or painted surface reapply as soon as the lacquer or paint starts to show signs of wear.

6. Bring cushions Indoors

Bring cushions indoors when not in use as they can easily become mildewed if left out in the rain. Wash or surface sponge regularly following the care label on the cushions to keep them in good order.

7. Store Your Furniture in Winter

Protect all garden furniture from the harsh elements of winter by storing in a basement, garage or outbuilding. If you don't have space cover your furniture with a waterproof cover and find a sheltered spot in the garden to store it. In any case always bring your cushions and garden umbrella indoors for the winter.

If you want to know more about making your garden look good with patio furniture see http://patiosetsonline.com where you'll find consumer advice on buying the best patio sets for your garden including choice of materials and where to buy to get the best deal.

Here's some things to think about before walking on the roof of a house. If you slip and fall off the roof you could get hurt seriously. For your own safety if you have no experience walking on a roof use extreme caution. I would even suggest using a ladder and moving the latter around the perimeter of the house if you are inspecting the roof for damage.

Here's some things to keep in mind before walking on a house roof.

1. If the building is above two stories hire a contractor especially if you think the roof has building damage.

2. If the roof is too steep stay off. This could be extremely hazardous to your health.

3. If the roof is severely damaged and has loose shingles or tiles, this could create a safety hazard as you slip on one of these loose shingles and possibly fall off the roof.

4. You should stay off the roof at all costs if there is snow or ice. Ice obviously is extremely slippery and would be difficult to walk on. The difficulty would be increased if the roof has a steep slope.

5. Now last but not least if the roof is wet you should avoid walking on it until it is dry. I have been on wet roofs before and personally slipped myself losing my balance but not falling off of the roof.

Climbing up on a roof and walking around is not child's play and should be left to an experienced professional . If you feel comfortable walking around on any roof please use caution. If you slip in the middle of the roof there is a good chance you will be able to regain your balance or have time to stop yourself before falling off.

I would suggest using caution near the edges of the roof. If the roof is too steep or you don't feel comfortable, why risk serious injury. Use common sense along with the proper ladders to ensure your safety and "Think before walking on a house roof."

Home Improvements - Handling the Money Issue

Okay. You found a contractor or service provider that you like. You received an estimate to your satisfaction, you understand the terms of an agreement (i.e. down payment, time to complete, materials to be used, etc.) and have decided to move forward.

First understand that an estimate, by definition, is just that. An estimate is a rough idea to produce a statement of the approximate cost of the project. It is not a promise. Also understand the estimate is for the time it should take to complete the project understanding that if something gets in the way of that completion, oftentimes it will, that a satisfactory resolution to the completion will be set in place immediately upon discovery.

Contact the service pro and let him/her know that you are ready to take the next step and enter into a formalized agreement (contract). At this time, the service pro will set up a time to meet with you to discuss in detail every aspect of the project possible, i.e. materials to be used, color selection, setting a final cost and setting the start and end times. Be realistic about the time it will take to complete the project. This will mostly be determined based the professional experience and labor personnel.

Regarding down payments. We all have our own horror stories and have heard stories from others. However, it is not ethical to make the professional buy all your materials with no money down from you. This is where trust comes into play. If you are not comfortable making a materials down payment, ask to pay the supplier directly. Be advised that if you wish to purchase the materials directly, you most likely will end up paying the full price rather than a discount offered to the service pro if he/she chooses to share that with you. Ask for it.

The best way to handle payments, in my opinion, depending on the size and scope of the project, is to break down the project into segments. Say the job is for a painting project that will take you one week to complete. Half down payment and half due at completion should suffice. If you are not comfortable with paying half, then reason with the pro. They want your business, but you want their trust. In the event that 99% of the work is done, but something else needs to be completed but cannot at that time for one reason or another, agree on a partial payment of the remaining balance due. This keeps honesty in place and you are not looking for someone else to finish the job if the service pro does not finish. This rarely occurs, but it is good to keep everything in fair balance.

That said good luck with your project. If you have any questions or comments about a project you wish to begin or questions about the way a service pro handled your estimate, do not hesitate to contact me. I would be glad to assist and offer my opinion.

Disadvantages In A Flood Risk Area

When your house is located in a flood region, you have to suffer all the consequences that come with it. Floods may come any time, and you have to be always be prepared for it. One hitch for living in a flood area is it will affect your flood zone insurance premium.

Insurance companies are becoming hesitant to give insurance policies to houses located on flood risk areas because it can not have escaped every one's attention that parts of the United Kingdom were severely devastated by floods in 2006 and 2007. This will affect insurance providers too because if everybody suddenly files for a flood insurance claim, either they will have to raise all the insurance premiums or they will close shop before the year ends.

With this, insurance providers are appealing to the government to focus their attention in increasing flood defenses especially in the areas worst hit by the recent events. Most of the standard home insurance policy providers in the UK very rarely include flood damage cover. This is why you have to ensure your homes and your house contents with an appropriate insurance policy.

If you are lucky your insurance provider may renew your policy but even then, do not be surprised if you will be asked to pay a much higher premium since you live in an area hit by the recent flooding. This is one of the disadvantages of living in a high risk area. Even if you want your home and properties covered by insurance, the providers will not be welcoming you with open arms.

Insurance firms have a business to run and if you pose as a high risk customer, you can not blame them and they are not obliged to renew your flood insurance policy even though you are an existing policy holder of their company.

If you have been a victim of the recent flooding in the UK, and have seen your hard-earned properties and possessions get destroyed before your eyes, calling insurance companies to get a cover policy may not be the wisest move. Your chance of getting one is very remote as the insurance companies are still suffering from the sting of the countless flood damage claims filed before their offices.

There is even the possibility that many of the existing insurance companies may remove flood insurance cover from their standard insurance policies unless the government will do something, like focus on this problem and increase its budget for flood defense. If this happens and the government will not make a move, those living in areas prone to flooding or those considered as high risk areas will suffer.

A Guide to Platform Bed Plans

Do you want to try your hand at building a platform bed? For those of you who dont yet know what a platform bed is, its an exciting, old way of sleeping that incorporates a simple, elegant frame and a single mattress. Its lines have been used in Europe, Scandinavia, and Japan for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Platform beds can be made of wood or metal. If youre looking to build a platform bed, youre probably thinking about wood.

Platform beds can be extremely simple. The extremely simple platform beds have no headboard or footboard, and certainly no canopy. They incorporate slats, which, in effect, replace the need for a box spring, since, because they are sturdy yet somehow slightly flexible, support the single mattress on top. The result is that you get a good nights sleep, are very comfortable, and yet dont end up with back pains or numb muscles in the morning.

Its ever better for your back than sleeping on the floor. And now, with the rapid proliferation of memory foam, your platform bed can be even more comfortable and healthy. Memory foam is a gel-like polymer that accepts your shapes and bones, but supports it fully. (It was first used in hospitals, and is now a popular mattress and pillow material.)

Platform bed plans can be more complex too; you can add headboards, footboards, canopies, even extra flourishes and storage units. You can build the storage units as one with the bed frame, or you can create rolling drawers supported by castors, so that the drawers are modifiable and easily maneuverable throughout your bedroom.

Its not the most difficult job in the world for a handyperson. If you want to build a platform bed, you can order platform bed plans from any of a number of plans retailers. Woodworking clubs, furniture enthusiast groups, and other organizations can give or sell you plans. You can also buy plans online.

Platform Beds Info provides detailed information about contemporary, Japanese, discount, and wood platform beds and platform storage beds, as well as platform bed frames and plans. Platform Beds Info is the sister site of Futons Web.

Home Selling Tips - Best Real Estate Advice Ever

One of the most important things to remember when selling your home is to keep it as clean as possible. If you need help or don't have the time to organize your stuff, you can hire a home staging professional in your area. Ask your real estate professional for more information.

1. Remove any clutter from the home and place it in storage. Do not store this stuff on the property if you don't have enough room. Storing clutter in closets or in your garage, will often make these areas look smaller. By removing clutter or even large pieces of furniture, the rooms will look larger.

2. Disconnect yourself emotionally from your home. This is a big problem for people who have lived in their house for long periods of time. If you've raised a family here, the children could have emotional ties also to the home. Some home sellers are looking for someone special to buy their home, if you've got the time and money to wait, you can be selective but be careful, because the longer you wait, the market could go up or down.

3. When your real estate professional is showing the house, it's always a good idea to leave the home until the potential homebuyers are gone. One example of this would be if you were in a bad mood or didn't have a good day and were a little upset at the world. Your mood could cause potential homebuyers to lose interest in the property. I've seen this more than once.

4. Make sure everything is operating properly. This would include doors, door knobs, windows, kitchen appliances, garage door openers, cabinet drawers, bathroom fixtures, toilets, faucets, lights, switches, electrical outlets and anything else that moves, slides, turns or rotates that is part of the home.

5. The Interior and exterior walls of the home should be in good shape. Make sure there's no termite damage, wood rot, peeling paint, broken windows or holes in the walls.

6. Make sure the flooring is in good shape. Some real estate professionals will suggest, replacing the carpeting with a neutral color. This method often works pretty good but I have seen plenty of homes that were re-carpeted and after the home was purchased the carpeting was replaced again, by the new owners. Just make sure the flooring is in good shape.

7. Here's a trick that definitely works a little magic when selling a home. Leave some cookies or a nice fruit bowl on the dining room table. There is no need to leave a sign that says "Eat Me". It gives the home a warm feeling, almost like a country atmosphere.

8. Even better than home selling tip number seven would be baking some cookies just before the perspective buyers arrive, it's not the cookies, it's the smell from the cookies that most people cannot resist.

These are just a few home selling tips but the most important is to keep the inside and outside of the home clean.

Greg Vanden Berge is working on the internet to promote the education for creating simple to follow guides and home building books to help professional building contractors as well as the weekend warriors. Planning Your Bathroom Tile Design, Pattern & Installation

If you are planning to tile a bathroom by yourself, this article will help you plan your bathroom tiling installation in the best and cost effective way as well as giving you some tile design ideas. We will guide through your new bathroom tile design and installation planning step by step.

Attention - Note that planning your tiling installation properly is the most important step for smooth, easy going and problem free bathroom tile installation.

Remember a DIY bathroom tiling installation isn't a quick job, so don't miss the point and plan it right. All the time spent planning your tiling installation will save you money and headaches.

You have to plan your bathroom-tiling project carefully; choose the tile design and tile patterns, what materials you need and which tools you require.

Choose your Bathroom Tile design & Tile patterns

The tile patterns that you can create with different tiles are limited only by your own Tile design ideas. A large variety of standard tile designs, ideas and tile patterns are available. Some tile manufacturers may make special custom tile designs for you.

Choosing the tile design is obviously the first thing you need to do, with out deciding this you can not start planning your bathroom tile installation.

You can find a few basic bathroom tile design ideas & tile patterns, check it out.

For some Inspiration you can check Google pictures for some Bathroom Tile design ideas, there are over a million bathroom pictures here.

Tile suitability - Tiles are made in porous and non-porous varieties. When planning a bathroom tile installation, you should choose the non-porous ceramic tiles.

If your bathroom is small and the tiles have designs on them, you may have to go for smaller sized tiles as they have smaller designs. Too large tile designs may not suit small bathrooms so choose a smaller tile design for smaller bathrooms.

If you go for a plain color, the size isn't that important, however try to follow the rule above anyway.

A good tile design idea is to choose contrasting colors for the floor tiles and wall tiles. Then have a skirting line the same color as the floor tile.

Another tile design idea is changing color at chest level, which will change the look of your bathroom.

Try to choose bathroom accessories that compliment the color of the walls.

Materials - How much will you need? - To calculate the quantity of materials that you need, you must take precise measurements of the total area that you wish to tile.

From the total area and the size of each tile, you can calculate the number of tiles required (you must know the size of the tiles you have chosen).

You must also remember to take into account the gaps between tiles when calculating the number of tiles needed, so make sure you include spacers appropriate to the tile size chosen.

If this equation becomes a little complicated, you can always use the table "Calculating your Tile needs" (link here) on this page.

When calculating consider more than half a tile as a full tile and less than a half tile as a half tile. If you have chosen a multicolored bathroom, calculate each color separately and note down the tile requirements.

Ordering tiles - Order the tiles on the basis of the measurements taken. Note that tiles are packed in boxes and the supplier is unlikely to sell tiles individually.

Remember to order extra tiles as you can be sure that some tiles will break during installation (even the best professional breaks tiles). In addition some of these extra tiles could be used in the future if any tiles need replacing. This is not only good but an advisable practice.

Always order additional tiles since the tiles you have ordered may not be available in future, and if you require replacement tiles, you will have difficulty finding a match.

Best tools for a good job - Make sure you choose the right tool for the job. It'll make the job easier and safer too. You probably have a basic toolbox however for tiling installation you need special tiling tools.

Some of them are expensive but don't waste your money buying professional tools that you won't use enough to pay for themselves. Instead hire them. For some $$ you can have the best tools for a few days. And if you've done your planning properly you'll only need them for a few hours.

Remember, that planning your tiling installation properly is the most important step for smooth, easy going and problem free bathroom tile installation.

I hope it's been useful, happy tiling!

Black Mold Removal And Small Bathroom Remodeling: How To Keep It Out

Black mold is a fungus that spreads relentlessly in your bathroom

Very few bathrooms escape the dreaded black mold fungus. Sooner or later it finds a nice damp corner of your shower or your walls and begins to grow. Slowly at first then before you know it it's all over your beautiful bathroom. Black mold is notoriously difficult to get rid of and control but a cure is possible. I reveal the secret below.

How to spot black mold in your bathroom

Well it's difficult to miss it. It's a black blight, which starts in corners and cracks then grows along joins and seals. The bigger it gets the faster it grows It loves to follow the lines of silicon sealer and grout between ceramic tiles. It seems to get inside the silicon sealer even the fungal resistant kind. It can turn your lovely bathroom into a dirty pit if you don't do something about it quickly.

General measures to keep black mold out of your small bathroom

There are some common sense things that you can do to slow down the march of the black mold in your bathroom. Black mold thrives on moisture so keep your bathroom well ventilated. Open windows and doors after use and wipe down surfaces to encourage them to dry faster.

Wiping down all ceramic surfaces with a dilute solution of bleach every few days will also help to slow down the growth of the fungus.

Traditional remedy for black mold in the bathroom

The traditional cure for black mold has been to cut out the affected areas of sealer and grout and any bits of wall covering that is contaminated. Wash the whole place down with a dilute solution of bleach and then re tile, re grout and re seal. This cures the problem for a while but sooner or later, usually only a few months or weeks later, the black mold returns.

This is a very frustrating cycle to be riding on because you have to keep doing it. Many people eventually just give up and the black mold takes over.

The secret that can banish black mold from your small bathroom

Black mold in my small bathroom had been defeating my efforts to keep it under control and finally I decided to remodel the whole bathroom which I thought would get rid of it forever. Was I wrong! I managed to keep it out for a few short months but somehow it found it's way in again.

I cut out and replaced the contaminated silicon sealer but this only slowed it down. Then someone told me about a product called 'Mold and Mildew Remover'. You simply spray it onto the affected areas then leave it for 3-5 minutes before rinsing it off. This sounded too good to be true but I thought that I would give it a try anyway.

The person that told me about the product also told me that the secret was to be patient with it and not expect to see instant results from just one spraying so I set about treating the affected areas of my little bathroom 2-3 times a week and watched what happened. After the first month I dropped the treatment to 2-3 times a month.

The results were nothing short of amazing and fantastic. I thought that I saw an improvement after the first week and after the second week I was convinced that the black mold was at least not growing any more. After a month the patches of black mold were definitely smaller than they had been and after 6 months they are nowhere to be seen. They have completely vanished and I'm so very pleased with it.

Damp Basement Solutions - Home Tips

A leaky basement can be a nightmare: the pervasive damp can cause mold growth and musty smells, items stored down there can be ruined, and the foundation can even be damaged by persistent water! If you have moisture, drips, seepage, or other water related issues in your basement, you need to get it sealed and dried out fast, before major problems develop. A wet basement isn't the end of the world, though: there are a number of solutions to get your basement dry, and keep it that way.

The first step to eliminating your basement moisture problem is identifying the source of the water. Once you have located where the water is entering the building, you can more accurately resolve the issue. The following basement drying strategies are grouped by the source of the water to help you easily connect the appropriate solution to your particular problem.

Drainage Problems

Exterior drainage issues can be a major source of water in your basement; if water is not properly diverted away from your foundation, it can frequently work its way inside. If you notice water flowing toward your house on rainy days, have blocked or malfunctioning gutters, or observe signs of erosion around your house, you likely have drainage problems. Some drainage issues are simple to resolve: if your gutters aren't working, clean and repair them. Pay special attention to downspouts, and be sure that they are directing water away from your house, not toward it! Other drainage issues can be more difficult to resolve; if your gutters aren't the source of your drainage issue, you'll want to consult a professional basement waterproofing company. They will be able to identify problematic water patterns and correct them with exterior diversion methods, which frequently require grading and installing bubblers and other water redirection systems.

Basement Leaks

Water can also work its way into your basement through cracks or crevices in your foundation. This type of problem usually manifests itself as a visible break or fracture, a trickle of water, or a damp spot. Keep in mind that basement leaks can also be caused by a porous foundation: there doesn't necessarily have to be a split for water to be seeping in. If you've located an actual crack, you can use one of several basement sealing compounds to fill it in. However, if you determine that water is leaking in through the walls of the basement itself, you'll need to take more thorough measures. You have a number of options for waterproofing your basement: vinyl wall sheeting, epoxy wall/floor paint, and exterior membranes are among the most popular. If you're uncomfortable tackling the job yourself, a waterproofing specialist can provide professional basement sealing results.

Flooding

Sometimes, no matter how good your yard drainage or how carefully your basement has been sealed, water gets in. Whether the result of a burst pipe, torrential rains, or a creek breaching its banks, floods happen. If you live in a flood-prone area, or just want to be prepared in case of disaster, you can mitigate the severity of basement floods. While most basement moisture issues are addressed after-the-fact, you'll get the best results if you're proactive with regard to basement floods. For small amounts of water, interior drain tiles will usually do the job: consider this method if you have a toilet that frequently overflows, or a washing machine that leaks. For larger volumes of water, you'll need a sump pump. This small pump will make a huge difference in how fast water is drained from your basement, and since it kicks in as soon as the water arrives, a sump pump can make the difference between a little standing water and a whole lot of standing water. Contact your local foundation repair contractor to have a sump pump installed. If basement flooding is a frequent problem, you may also want to consider a battery-powered back up pump for power outages.

Make sure you address water problems in your basement promptly; instead of going away on their own, foundation moisture issues frequently snowball into moisture and mold crises. Take the time to identify and resolve the source of the moisture-you certainly won't regret it.

And if you're not the DIY type, there are always basement waterproofing and foundation repair companies willing to help!

Missing Attic Insulation

ICF - Insulated Concrete Forms - Method of Building Walls

There are several different methods used to build walls. This article will discuss the ICF method. We will look at the materials used in this method and then list the conclusions reached based on these materials. If you are standing inside the house, we will talk about the materials from the inside of the house to the outside of the house.

Gypsum Wall Board - this material absorbs water. The moist Gypsum wallboard can contribute to mold and mildew.

EPS foam - very good insulation properties. It is 'continuous and touching' which provides excellent energy savings.

Concrete - this material is poured in what is known as a 'continuous pour'. Even if the concrete is poured in lifts, the adhesive properties of concrete to itself allow the pour to be considered continuous. This material that goes from free flowing to rock solid is what provides the best-sealed envelope of a home.

EPS foam - very good insulation properties. It is 'continuous and touching' which provides excellent energy savings.

Cementious Finish - typically a fiber mesh wrap is applied to the walls and synthetic stucco materials are installed in two applications to get the requested look by the homebuyer.

Windows and Door openings - typically the openings are formed with 2x12's cut down to the width of the foam blocks and braced to accept the concrete pour. The 2x's are fastened with J-bolts that are placed prior to the concrete pour. An issue with the openings is that they have wood in the exterior walls in the areas where water has the highest possibility to enter the house. This creates the possibility, and likelihood, of water entering at these locations (the same as a wood framed house.) Remember, when the air is flowing thru the return air it is pressurizing the air which means 'additional air' has to come in the house. The window and door areas are where this air will come from, which allows water to get further into the wall, into the wood 2x bucks and farther away from the edges. This makes it take longer for the moisture to get out. When this occurs this will lead to the formation of mold and mildew.

Ease of construction - the trained skill level to build the walls of a custom home are similar to the skill level needed to build a concrete block home, or for a skilled carpenter to build a wood framed home.

Issues during construction - typical issues are proper bracing to minimize/eliminate concrete spills (blowouts) and bracing to keep the walls plumb (vertically aligned) and straight along the top of the forms.

The ORNL (Oak Ridge National Laboratory, contracted by the United States Department of Energy) after testing all 16 methods of construction proves the method of construction that Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) utilizes is the second best method of building a home (by approximately 9% less savings) in regards to energy savings. To confirm please view: http://www.ornl.gov/roofs+walls/research/detailed_papers/thermal/index.html

The ICF method exceeds all building codes for high wind resistance due to the use of poured-in-place concrete in the forms.

This article has discussed the ICF method of building walls. It has described the various materials that are used. This article has also shown the problems and benefits that each of these materials can cause when building a house. The use of the ICF method of building walls only fails in 2 areas of building a home to prevent mold and mildew issues, which is the use of wood around openings and the use of a gypsum product (drywall) on the interior of the exterior wall. The 2 inches of foam and the drywall board on the interior is what accounts for the 9% higher use of energy than a wall with concrete in direct contact with the interior, such as the most energy efficient wall that utilizes the method referenced by the ORNL as concrete- insulation - concrete (CIC).

Real Savings With Artificial Stone - Decorating

Home builders today are challenged as never before to deliver quality homes at affordable prices. The current economic climate -- reduced access to credit, lower prices, and nervous investors -- means builders must compete in a tough buyer's market. It's essential to reduce costs wherever possible.

Yet, home buyers still demand top quality and enduring beauty.

Increasingly, builders are solving this dilemma by taking advantage of modern materials like artificial stone veneer, sometimes referred to as a stone facing, manufactured stone, or faux stone. This remarkable material makes possible fresh and innovative designs, greater flexibility, and reduced costs, all adding up to the ever-important curb appeal that attracts qualified buyers.

Out With The Old

Traditional brick is a proven building material and has been used for centuries. But it is also expensive, both in its initial cost and in the added costs of shipping, masonry labor, and reinforced foundations required to support its extra weight.

To counter these drawbacks, builders have lately turned to vinyl siding, drawn by its cheaper cost, lighter weight, and easier installation. But these advantages are not enough to overcome a major drawback: the tendency to use the siding in unimaginative, even boring designs.

The popularity of brick and the convenience of vinyl siding has inhibited creativity and led to a rash of new subdivisions filled with repetitive designs that look as if they all came off the same assembly line. Limiting themselves to these conventional materials means many builders miss opportunities to attract new and design-conscious buyers.

In With The New

Countering this trend, savvy builders have discovered the range of possibilities provided by artificial stone veneer. Modeled after natural stone and virtually indistinguishable from the original, artificial stone veneer is manufactured from a formulation of Portland cement, natural aggregates, and carefully selected pigments. Durable, light weight, and easy to work with, the material can substitute for wall stone in both interior and exterior projects ranging from chimneys and fireplaces, to fences, pillars, stone walls, and stone facings.

There is also the option to add stone veneer to popular traditional materials like wood siding, stucco, and board-and-batten, giving your home a custom-built look at affordable prices. Now, in combination with stone veneer accents, these techniques make possible unique designs that are more attractive then vinyl siding and less expensive than traditional brick.

Solid Savings

Using artificial stone veneer instead of traditional brick leads to remarkable savings. Besides the lower cost of the product itself, artificial stone veneer's light weight means a substantial reduction in the cost of shipping, labor, and foundations and footings. For example, builders can easily achieve a savings of between $1,700 and $4,000 (Canadian) on an average-sized detached home.

When selecting a vendor for artificial stone veneer, it's important to look for a company with both a superior product and a solid reputation. For Canadian builders, Stone Selex satisfies both requirements.

In addition to its existing product line from Artistic Stone, Stone Selex is now an authorized distributor for Canyon Stone, giving customers -- builders and renovators alike -- even more options for creating stunning stone designs to attract buyers and increase the value of a home. For your security, they offer a 50-year warranty on every stone they sell, keeping you covered for generations to come.

Remodeling Help In Carlsbad

What you are thinking about remodeling your house and you live in Carlsbad. Let me give you some advice about some local contractors and some of the people involved. I used a company called Service Magic to find a local heating and air conditioning contractor. All I had to do was go on the internet , type in some information about my self and what I wanted to have done to my home. This didn't seem that bad of a idea at the time. But look what I found out.

I went to their web site, filled in my information and with in minutes I had received the names of at least 4 contractors. Wow this is neat. I didn't even get to start calling any of them when my phone rang. It was one of the contractors secretaries. She introduced herself and asked what would be a good time for someone to come out to look at the work I wanted done.

I was surprised at the speed things were taking place but in a way glad that I had a reputable contractor from one of the largest construction referral services on the internet. I told her 10:00 would be fine. I got a call shortly after that from one of the other companies. He wanted to meet me that mourning at 8:00 if it was Ok with me. I told him of course, let's do this. Then the next one called and I thought great you can come at 1:00. Well you guessed it the next one was coming over at 2:30.

The first contractor showed up as scheduled at 8:00. We talked about what I wanted done and he whips out his note book and starts figuring out a price. This took place around 15 minutes into the meeting. This guys good I thought. Being a General Contractor in Carlsbad myself, for a job like this I would go back to my office and figure out a price and then double check my figures for a accurate estimate. It took this guy less than 5 minutes to create a proposal of around 10,700 dollars for every thing.

Well I was thinking to myself, the job should be around 7,000 dollars but what do I know about construction. I informed him that I would think about it and that I was going to meet with a couple of other contractors that day. He ask me who the other contractors were. I proceeded to tell him that I probably shouldn't tell him who they were. Well your not going to believe this. He put on his physic hat and told me who was coming over. The only thing he didn't know was what time they where coming over.

Oh I forgot to mention before he left he told me he would knock ten percent off the job if I signed the contract right now. I pretended like I was excited just to see his reaction. He looked at me like he had won the gold metal in sales. I told him thanks but I bet your new offer with the ten percent discount will be good for the next few day. Right I asked. He wasn't looking that excited any more as he replied with a Yes it will be good for a while. I thanked him and he went on his way.

My 10:00 never showed but his secretary gave me the old, " He had to go do a emergency job and could he reschedule tomorrow at the same time. I said that would be fine. As a contractor myself I have always put the work I had to do first and foremost.

About 12:30 I get a call from my next heating and air conditioning contractor. He is running late but will be there at 1:30. I appreciate the call and I will see you then. The only problem now is that I have another contractor coming at 2:30. That give the next contractor less than one hour before the next guy shows up. I never liked going over to someone's house and running into another remodeling contractor.

The next contractor was very informative and knew his stuff. I listened and learned. He told me he was going to have to go back to his office and would have a price back in the mourning. Great I told him as I hurried him out the door.

The last contractor of the day shows up and wants to know whose been over to the house, was it these guys or those guys. I told him I wasn't going to tell him who was over. Now this guy was a salesman. He did a little more probing before he let me in on the fact that his company doesn't do complete home installations. He made up some story that his company only replaces the forced air units. I could tell he didn't want to do the job once he found out I knew what I was talking about. So I said my good byes to Mr. Salesman.

The bad part about him was latter on that week his company sent us some mailers. The kind that doesn't have your name on it and everyone in the neighborhood get's one. I couldn't believe my eyes when I started to read this letter. It said we would be glad to give you an estimate on all your heating and air conditioning needs or services. " We Do Complete Installs". I told my wife we could have used this a few weeks ago. Then I recognized the name of the company and now knew that the salesman had lied to me for sure.

That night I started to think about what was going on here it seemed like I was being set up. Everyone knew what was going on but me. It seemed clear to me that these people knew each other.

Well as time went on we ended up hiring the first guy that came over. He seemed to have the best product at the most reasonable price. His company also did a great job. Keep one thing in mind here out of five contractors that I gave the opportunity to bid the job. Only three showed up and from them I only got two bids. Why didn't I get more bids? Quite frankly I was to busy working at the time and of course the other two guys were always going to show up and that kind of strung me along. My mistake.

Here's the kicker to all of this. Service Magic calls me up one day to tell me they would like to start sending me construction leads as a General Contractor.

I listened to what they had to say and was almost ready to sign up with them again. That's right, I was signed up with them when they first started until they changed the rules on me. The salesman that originally contacted me said if I paid them the 100 dollar sign up fee they would let me pick what jobs I wanted to do. That lasted about 5 months before I noticed that they were not sending me siding referrals to pick from. I called them up only to talk to someone who didn't understand the State Of California Contractors Licensing Board.

Well I wasn't about to reinvent the wheel. I simply told them that I should a least get my money back, right. They said they would look into it further as I never heard from them again about my 100 dollars. Well things have changed at Service Magic since I was with them when they started.
As a home owner you don't think you are paying Service Magic because all you do is fill out a simple form giving some information about yourself.

I found out that Service Magic sent all four of these contractors my original information. Each contractor then had to pay 55 dollars each to Service Magic for a total of 220 dollars. All I have to say is how are they getting away with charging this much money for sending a out a simple referral to these contractors.

The contractor unfortunately passes this expense on to his customers. You as the home owners end up paying these fees as a cost of doing business with them. Some contractors think this is a great way of doing business but you might think differently in the future if you start paying over 100 dollars for a simple construction referral.
